I planted seeds today, too. This is not a good time of year for flowers in my garden. It is frustrating!

GGG -- sometimes we just have to rip stuff out. I've got some candidates on my list. You've got me concerned about yellow crocosmia as I desperately need some tall yellow (deer proof) blooms in my garden. I'm going to Plant Delights Nursery for their open house. First trip for me and the only thing that I thought I'd buy is yellow crocosmia 'Jenny Bloom'!

I just went around on my morning stroll with my camera. I feel like I've run out of material! Everything is the same old thing that I've been posting --- coneflowers, monarda, agastache, echinops, petunias, phlox, perennial heliotrope, salvia.

My 'Lucifer' crocosmia and 'Starfighter' lily are the only new blooms.

I have some crocosmia I'm killing as well. My goodness, they propagate like bunnies but have very little bloom. I think the spot they are in must have too much shade. That's my excuse anyway! Unfortunately the soil is such in that area it is difficult to dig them up. So this year I resorted to using my wheelbarrow (upside down) to block out the light and kill them. It worked really well on the smaller patch. The (much) larger patch I just started.

And here I am thrilled that my yellow crocosmia have bloomed for the first time. They are in a pot. It sounds as if I should leave them there.

GGG, my roommate won't throw out any plant or cuttings. We have a jillion pieces of pothos rooting.

I am growing dwarf dahlias from seed and they are doing well. You might want to use some of those for color. They are assorted colors.

G, I feel your pain! I have a few perennials that have grown to humunguous proportions and are taking up valuable rose growing space. I'm going to let them bloom a bit longer then they are getting divided and moved, hopefully to a spot where they can live a long and robust life.

Crocosmia, Byzantine Glads and some others that grow from bulbs or corms multiply by growing a new corm atop the old one, pushing the bulb ever upward out of the soil. Small corms form around the mother bulb, on runners in the case of crocosmia. Left to rise to the top, they form colonies of grass-like blades with few to no blossoms.

They like lifting and resetting every year or two, and the extras moved, preferably to share space in another garden.
With care, they bloom and attract butterflies.

My candidate is Herbstonne rudbeckia. It is way too tall for my tastes. Maybe I can find a home for it across the drive at the back of the cellar bed with all the other yellows. I should have cut it way back a month ago. I don't like plants that I have to constantly clip!

Thanks for that lesson, Nell, on the gladiolas. I've ordered some of the Byzantine glads to plant this fall and was thinking maybe I should cancel my order.

I bought at crocosmia 'Jenny Bloom' today at Plants Delight Nursery. I'll see what I can do to keep it blooming. I don't mind the replanting.

My 'Lucifer' (from a friend's division) was new to my garden last year and I moved it this spring. It's blooming quite well, so I plan to dig it up every spring and replant it.

I also bought a cestrum 'Orange Peel'...been wanting one of those for awhile.
