I've been doing some flooring research as well... Before I closed on my home, I looked at a bunch of town homes and condos and the like, and was interested in upgrading from carpet to hardwood. Few places allowed hardwood (some did on 1st floor only), but most did allow engineered wood, though, and I couldn't really tell the difference from the spec models, as it is of course real hardwood on the top veneer. I think part of the decision may be based on the floor condition that already exists--sub floor, existing flooring, etc.--and what you're planning on doing there, as a solid hardwood floor is thicker than an engineered floor. I think as long as you are getting decent product and follow the installation instructions regarding subfloor prep and moisture content and allow aclimating time as required per the install instructions, shouldn't matter either way--wood is wood, and both solid flooring and engineered flooring require proper prep and installation for a good result.

Emerald floors is a very well known spammer! Because of the concerns brought to your attention, a thinner gauge floor is going to be in your best interest. Retrofitting has its nightmares most of the time. Look at all the options and not just what Lowe's or Home Depot have to offer.

I'm having the same concern. I originally went to lumber liquidators and found a nice hand scraped strand bamboo flooring. I then went online and researched a load of companies. So far, I like Cali bamboo. My biggest concern was the formaldehyde in the products. Cali bamboo has little to no formaldehyde added in there product. I've read those same reviews about Morning star, but they were outdated. I was emailed a material safety data sheet on Morning Star brand, but no one could tell me how much formaldehyde content was in the morning star product. At the bottom of the sheet there was a disclaimer: "The information and data herein are believed to be accurate and have been compiled from sources deemed to be reliable. It is offered for your consideration, investigation and verification. Lumber Liquidators makes no warranty of any kind, express or implied, concerning the accuracy of completeness of the information and data herein. Lumber Liquidators will not be liable for claims relating to any party's use of or reliance on information and data contained herein regardless of whether it is claimed that the information and data are inaccurate, incomplete or otherwise misleading. It is incumbent upon the user to obtain the most up-to-date information". So I guess what they mean is that the info on the safety data sheet is BS. I'd like to know. Cali bamboo is great, but I actually prefer the hand scraped look they have from Morning Star at lumber liquidators. Does anyone know if Morning Stars 2011 line has added formaldehyde?? Right, the factory pre-finished coatings are much harder and more durable than anything you can do site-finished. Well, providing you buy a decent product, that is. You can usually tell by the length of the warranty or you can call the manufacturer for information. Usually when people think "refinish" they are thinking of power-sanding all the way down to bare wood, re-staining, then brand-new topcoat. For light surface damage you can do what the flooring guys call "screening" (don't ask me why), which is a light buff, not going down to bare wood, then apply fresh topcoat. If you wear shoes inside the house or live near a beach then I could certainly see planning on a refinish when moving out after 10 years. We're a "barefoot" family, so it wasn't a concern for me at all. Anyway, I'm no expert so I definitely recommend talking to your flooring guy or even contacting a couple manufacturers for information. I bought my wood though a company called prosource, I think the brand is "provenza". Here's a photo although it's tough to see the hand-scraping because of the dark color. Just for fun, here's the matching hand-scraped coffee table that I made for DW.
