Was Cream of Wheat always this much????

I sure don't remember it being so expensive. I ran out a couple weeks ago so thought I'd add it to my little shopping delivery. $4.99 for a normal box and the same for 12 packets. Or you can buy a case for $92! This is Kroger. Has it always been so much or am I just being forgetful? Seems like a lot for mush. I don't eat it very often but do like it sometimes.

It may have gone up in price as other things have but if that’s 40 cents for one serving it’s still inexpensive for a meal.

Well, when you put it that way, Elmer, I guess it isn't so expensive. Still, I don't remember it being that much in the past. It has been awhile since I bought any, maybe a year or so.

Carol, I was about ready to send you an email. But saw this post so will tell about the wheat crop/lack of here. The drought eliminated most of it. East of here where they received two late snows we didn't there is some. But around here I'm not sure anyone will cut a dryland acre. Then the freezes hurt the irrigated wheat which due to the weather conditions hasn't grown like normal. There are a lot of empty heads and lots of lodged heads. I've heard of areas withing 100 miles of here where they say that at least 80% of the irrigated wheat is lost. I've seen several circles that they have laid down to bale because of the freeze. There is some that will be cut. Like a few growers have told me you won't know till you run the combine over it. One grower said he felt this wheat that has went 70+ bushels the last several years will do good to average 45-50 an acre. They say we have a good chance of moisture tonight and tomorrow. I will have to see it to believe it. They have shortened our cooldown period. Be looking for an email. Jay

Sue, according to Animal Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver if you make your own creAm cheese it will be lactose free. Commercially produced stuff uses chemicals so the lactose is still there. Co-op food stores and health food stores etc might also have cultured cream cheese. Here is an oatmeal wheat bread that I got from Ohio Mom's website. I tried to find it on her site to link to it and could not find it. This is my families favorite bread. Oatmeal Wheat Bread 2 packages yeast 1/4 cup warm water 2 cups cooked oatmeal (not instant) 1/2 cup warm buttermilk 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup melted butter 2 tsp. salt 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour Mix the yeast and water, let stand for 5 minutes. Mix again. Add oatmeal, buttermilk, sugar, butter, salt and whole wheat flour and all purpose flour. Work in enough to form a soft dough. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place in a large bowl and cover with damp cloth. Let rise in a warm place (not oven) for 2 hours. Punch down the dough and let rest for 10 minutes. Form 2 loaves and place in buttered loaf pans. (9x5x3inch) Redampen the cloth and cover the loaves, allow to rise another 45 minutes in a warm place until proofed. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake for about 40 to 45 minutes. Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I apologize if I did not make it clear in my post what I am trying to do....the bedding is brand new and I am looking for a color to paint my master bedroom. (Currently the master bedroom is painted off white because the previous owners never painted an actual color). I want to paint my bedroom a color that will go beautifully with the bedding BUT whatever color I paint the bedroom, I want it to flow well with the whole wheat out in the hallway. I am afraid that whatever color goes well with the bedding, might clash with the hallway. Many of you are mentioning sage green...downstairs in my living room I have BM's Dried Basil which is a very nice sage green and it goes very nice with the whole wheat foyer. I do have that small block pillow shown in the pic above (the one with the blue square on it) however I don't have anything else blue in the room. I am not sure choosing blue for the walls would work. There is absolutely no blue in the rest of the fabrics. It seems to make sense to go with either gold or green...I just have never seen a green room with bold red fabrics before. Will it look like Christmas?

I find generic, and especially Walmart generic, to be hit or miss. If I buy name brand, it is always the same unless they change the formula. Walmart is bad about changing the supplier of their brand at any time. I may like one I buy, but if they can save a half penny, they will swap suppliers. So the cream cheese or catsup, or beans you buy one time will not be the same the next. They also seem to get the "seconds" or it will slightly thinner than the name brand. I have had fairly good luck with Publix brands, but even then, some I haven't liked. Fortunately, I can spend the little extra so far to get the constant taste I like. I buy the same brand each time for everything I buy. (And I found out this spring why, when I had to get different paper towels and toilet paper!)

While I haven't checked it lately, I usually thought it somewhat above average price for that type of cereal. I think that if you can find bulk farina you may find it little different, if any, and usually somewhat less costly.

I eat quite a lot of oatmeal, ran out of the minute- or quick- the other day, looked for it at my usual discount grocer, the other day. They had only large flake and I had lots of that at home but, lacking teeth, like that as only about a quarter of my serving.

As I was hitchhiking, little enthusiasm for visiting other stores. Can ride the bus on a trasfer for 90 minutes including stops and return to bus on ssme route, but, being a bit of a country bumpkin, not yet familiar with routes and schedules.

On the way to a credit union nearby, I found a kilogram (2.2 lb.) of quick oatmeal for $2.99 at a discount store.

ETA later: $___ 2.29 ___!

Russia and India are top wheat producing countries. Need not comment on the former, but the latter had a crop failure and banned exports. Wheat had been trading high in the market.

Everything has gone up recently......not just cereal or wheat products. We are at the highest level of inflation we have experienced in 40 plus years! My grocery bill is close to double what it was this time last year.

Many stores are extremely high priced. See what Walmart charges. It's the only place I will shop now.

Too late, already bought it. The French Vanilla cake mix I ordred got replaced with "white" cake mix, whatever that is. Isn't that the same as vanilla? Probably not as good as the French vanillia, but oh well. My daughter's boyfriend and her are coming tomorrow and it's his birthday on Monday so I thought I'd bake a cake. Apparently he likes vanilla cake.

I find that Target and Walmart are far less expensive for packaged staple items. I priced a jarred spaghetti sauce at Acme for $4.78. It was 3.59 at Giant. And 2.78 at Target. And 2.58 at Walmart.

I last bought Cream of Wheat in 2020 - from Walmart, and it seemed a little pricey to me back then - $3.28 (checked my purchase history). It's gone up about 70 cents now.

So a REAL shocker. A small bag of Cheetos is now $5.19!!! Printed right on the bag. The last bag I bought had no price on the bag.
