A miniature tree with redoubled red rose flowers
Comments (12)Species is frequent in local retail outlets and not entirely rare in local plantings. At the moment I am seeing mostly the single-flowered 'Nana' being offered. Larger, older specimens around were hammered by 1990 winter, however last time I was at the Halda Klager Lilac Garden, Woodland, WA I saw an orange-and-white flowered cultivar blooming south of the house. It looked like it may have frozen down and then come back from the crown. I think at least one of the plants south of the main greenhouse at the Washington Park Arboretum, Seattle also came back and got back up to head height or more. Prior to 1990 there was 2 or 3 of them in the bed and I remember these as being seen in fruit. Perhaps the biggest one I've seen here was in a south-facing front yard near the University District but I think it went down in 1990, and then perhaps was killed by the occupants of the site when it tried to grow back - I may have seen new stems coming up at one point but nothing later (all viewing of the site over the years has been from a moving car on a steep hill). So the upshot is that these can be and have been grown here if they get a hot spot and a 30 year winter doesn't come along....See MoreMiniature Tree Roses
Comments (1)I'm sure that in your climate, your mini standard will require some winter protection. You could keep it in the container and sink the container into the ground for the growing season. When it starts to freeze, you will need to move your tree into an unheated building or contrive some way to protect the graft union (where the rose variety was budded onto the root stock stem) which is the vulnerable part of any grafted rose. All of my tree roses are grown in pots which are winter protected in an unheated garage, where they are moved outdoors in late winter when danger of a freeze has past. If you experience prolonged freezing temperatures where you live, your tree will definitely require some winter protection....See MoreGolden Sunblaze Miniature Rose Tree dimension question.

Comments (11)i'm in adrian MI ... C laws will not live thru the winter in most of MI ... the crypto is micro climate dependent ... it can not go outside until at least june ... in the meantime... need to know if there are holes in those pots ... if not.. you have drainage problems ... they need to be near a south window.. for lots of sun ... but not so close that they might get cold damaged if you thermostat kicks down at night ... especially if your windows ice ... my biggest problem in winter.. is the forced air furnace ... not much humidity in the house in winter.. for plants that need such ... as i said... tend toward dry .. insert finger and find out ..... and also learn the weight of a wet vs dry pot ... if you can get it thru late spring... past all frost/freeze issues ... then you can put it outside in full bright shade ... and plan on planting it in early fall ... we need a better pic ... to confirm an ID ... bottom line.. enjoy the heck out of it ... and dont get emotionally attached ... you might win.. you probably wont .... but you will learn along the way ... these plants were sold as short lived holiday plants ... not really meant to be long lived ... ken...See More
