Design Dilemma Windows Home Decorating

I think I screwed up (shutters)

I went for cafe shutters because i just needed the privacy aspect on the lower part of the window and I don’t like curtains or dark rooms, but I feel like this looks wonky. Should I have top shutters installed? (Please forgive the filthy window. I have to schedule window washers).

Why? It sounds like these accomplish exactly what you want. Top shutters will certainly darken the room, or if you open them all the way they will block the walls.

No you didn't screw up. But, I do think it looks a bit unfinished. I would find a great fabric (or this one), hang one panel on rod and stack it back to the right of the window. It will finish off the look, compliment your chair/ottoman and rug. It may even come in handy if you want to sleep in once in awhile.

Earthworm, although I'm also a newbie to Shallot growing (see earlier post "Shallot Startup Questions" in this forum), I'm pretty certain you'll be okay. You are definitely supposed to separate the bulbs out - basal plate notwithstanding. I separated all the bulbs (from the grocery store) and planted in Feb - all sprouted over a month's time and are going gangbusters now. :^) Cheers!

your results may differ from silvia's... i never quite understand what causes broc to bolt. sometimes big heads will stay green and tight for weeks, and then smaller offshoots will sprout seemingly immediately. it's likely caused by multiple combinations of many things. anyway, i eat them sprouted. they really don't taste any different...

I don't count the plants, but I can tell you the size of the blocks I plant. For 6 people, I find that two or three 3'x8' blocks of bush beans -- each a different variety -- planted at a 4-6" spacing will provide 1-2 meals per week for the 4-6 week harvest period with enough for raw snacking by the handful and, perhaps, a little left over at the height of harvest for freezing. About 20 feet of State Half-Runners planted in a wide row on each side of a 2ft fence (5-6 total rows with beans spaced at 4 inches and rows at 6 inches), provided about two cooked meals per week and plenty of raw snacking with a bit left over to freeze again through its harvest period. I don't know how long that would have continued because it was cut short by frost. I'm not too familiar with regular pole beans, but 10 feet of yardlong beans last year gave us a month of meals 1-2 times/week and 2 gallon freezer bags. Yields will vary depending on variety and conditions and number of meals will vary based on how much you like beans and how many vanish after picking as raw snacks.

Thanks...basically that's what I did. I lightly sanded it w/220grit as I've read about here. Then used Kilz primer and I've got the 1st coat of paint on now. In about 3 hrs I'm doing the 2nd coat. There was no lose stuff when I primed.

^Agree they seem to fit your need. I think you’ll get used to it. Lots of people only have them installed on the lower window. Just curious…what size are the louvers? I wouldn’t want them smaller than 3.5” if you did cover the entire window. We have shutters throughout our house, and, other than for cleaning, rarely open them all the way.

I would put something like those woven shades at the top. It would help to make it feel more finished and add warmth too.

I agree.. it feels odd… Also that top window will be a pain to clean.. add another shutter on top and leave them open… the location is odd…a picture of the whole wall may help …
