Best Alternatives to Peat Moss Without the Acidity?

I love how a small amount of peat moss greatly improves the moisture retentiveness of well-drained container soil. I do not love the acidity of peat moss, and I am not crazy about having to neutralize it with dolomite lime. What are the best alternatives, without the acidity?

Considering the ones I know about:

* Compost has too small particle sizes, but despite this, I find that too much compost in a container soil *dries up* the soil and actually reduces its moisture retention. I do not understand exactly why.

* Sized bark and bark compost I use all the time, but their moisture retention is poor.

* Turface is a favorite ingredient, but it does not behave like a wet sponge, the way peat moss does. It is more like a dry sponge, helping the moisture to stay at a low level within the soil a few more days.

I have not tried coconut coir or vermiculite. Are there any other alternatives?
