Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Need Rapid exterior color help for large craftsman--3 color

We have been going round in circles trying to pick paint colors for our house with sun peeling paint and now the painter is suddenly coming in two days to go over our paint colors and we are farther than ever from being settled. We have a combination of hardi plank siding and cedar shingles. Currently lighter on bottom and darker on top, plus trim and then a fourth accent color for front door and attic vents. I thought we were going to do SW Svelte Sage and Connected Gray, but we just looked at a neighbor's house with the same scheme and it's darker than we want. We are surrounded by forest.

Choice 1 - make it lighter - Svelte Sage and Ancient Marble

But you did say your neighbor has Svelte Sage and Connected Gray - do you really want something that close to what the neighbor has - or is this down the street a ways and not next door or across the street?

Choice 2 - go more greige than green - I always liked this combination - Colonade Gray has a slight green undertone. Just enough to make it work well in your environment.

Choice 3 - go with something a bit more bluer green gray than sage. One of my favorite exterior colors is SW Comfort Gray.

Personal preference - I would pick Comfort Gray, but everyone likes different colors.

You will want to test before having it painted.

I would go with off-white for body to pop up white trim.

When you say the entire front entry way -- do you mean the entire vertical column to the roof -- or just the lower portion with the arch up to the horizontal break line? Either way -- I would go lighter (just the opposite of your idea - sorry). Just like the windows are trimmed in white drawing you to notice them -- I would lighten the entrance area. Alternatively, consider an Exterior Glaze tinted with a slightly Darker Grey (or any color for that matter). This can be applied evenly ... or applied evenly and then brushed over with a clean push-broom (no kidding). The Darker Grey (or accent color) will settle in your stucco pattern but the under Grey color will still show thru making your entrance a subtle difference from everything else but tied together. Long and involved idea (sorry) but I've done this stucco application many, many times with fabulous results (for large interior areas). The technique is exactly the same for Exteriors and you can research it for more details. Good luck.

Shutters are too small for the windows and I think they don’t add much. My suggestion is the paint the house all bright white…B.M.Super White. Leave the brick as is and paint the door B.M. Somerville Red. I woud most definitely power wash the roof (carefully).

Thank you @houssaon. We do love this house and have worked on restoring/renovating the interior and now we're moving to the exterior. The landscaping and new front entry steps are the next big project to begin this summer and we're very excited to have it feel more cohesive and appropriate for the house and lot. We have thought about adding a sidelight, but the front door is actually original to the house and has such amazing detailing. It's in great shape and we're hoping to keep it if we can. We'll paint it and see if we want a door with a sidelight - I love the one you posted. Thank you!

That is a creamy white. I think you want the two whites to works together. Make sure you get a product that is formulated for decks.

Thanks. You're thinking in the same direction I was, Jennifer. I considered svelte sage with Grassland, but I will look at Ancient Marble when we go get samples today as well. The blue-green-gray direction was the new direction I had gone, but hadn't looked at Comfort Gray, and I like how it looks in that picture, so I will add it to my list. I had seen Unusual gray or Oyster bay (probably would need to be accent--might be too bold for main body) that I was going to look at. I also have Evergreen Fog and Rosemary on my list. Rosemary might be too dark.

Any suggestions for a similar darker shade to go with the Comfort Gray? Would you just go one or two levels down on the same color card? We play to go look at paint chips today and hopefully get samples of four or so to put on the siding to test.

We ended up getting paint samples of comfort gray and evergreen fog. Hoping they look good on the siding!

The comfort gray sample is looking quite baby blue on the house, but I'm hoping that's because it's against the current yellow undertones. The Evergreen Fog is very nice. I will snap a picture when dry. Thinking of Snowbound trim and SW Refuge for the door?

Blue and yellow are complements, so it will pull the blue from Comfort Gray, but Comfort Gray absolutely has blue green undertones that may feel too blue for you.

The best way to know is to paint a sample board and set it next to the stone near the front door.

When looking at colors you always want to see them next to the colors that will stay and not near the colors that are going away. Our minds process all the colors we see together and compares the colors to each other.

I didn't think of Evergreen Fog yesterday, but it is another really nice green.
