Narrow Hallway Design

Would love some design help on this hallway. We will be closing off the large room on the left with large doors soon. A few points I need help with:

1. Want to warm up the space (Long runner rug??)

2. I Love the canvas picture above the credenza but is it too small for the space?

3. Are the walls too busy?

4. Need to add something on the wall at the end of the hall as well

Would like to change out the hall chandelier for 2 hanging pendant lights.

Would love some feedback on how to make this space better

I think the focal point of the hall should be the wall at the end…outfitted with a console table or cabinet and some artwork/decor above it. A substantial runner with some pattern/color and some family photos or art on the walls will de-emphasize the segmented walls of the hallway and give a nice flow to the hallway. The console/decor as it is placed now emphasizes the segmented hallway and leaves the hallway feeling unbalanced.

If this is a high traffic area, the textured pieces may not be the best. Try for pieces that are as flat as you can get, and not able to be disturbed (also, plexiglass is lighter and safer than glass for framed pieces). Clumsy people like me are bound to crash into the corner of that credenza. If the credenza is not essential, you may want to think about getting a narrower piece with round corners. A runner is fine, and be sure to get a non slip mat underneath. I would add a lot more color, but that's my style. Also, I'd love to see lighting that's not all on the ceiling - perhaps a wall sconce above the door and on the wall near the little wall bump outs. All the ceiling lights may be overdoing it. See if the ceiling lights can be put on a dimmer so you have that flexibility to alter the atmosphere.

I once had a laundry closet in a room that was also used as a study. There was no room for doors of any kind. So I had a custom pleated shade made in colors to match the room. It could be pulled up completely out of the way when needed. It could be lowered most of the way to provide both screening and airflow. The shade was in a subtle stripe pattern that matched the surrounding trim and wall colors. It was somewhat translucent, so I could leave the closet light on behind it for a kind of cool effect. Such shades come in all kinds of weights and textures -- I suppose you could even have a roman style shade that fit over the outer frame of the door. I know mine got lots of complements.

Wow, Still lynski...you make a great point too! BTW-This is why I am awful on a jury. As the prosecution speaks, i am thinking "Fry the ba$tard!" Then the defense gets up and I think "OMG, this poor defendant has been framed!" If I hear good points and reasons, I can be easily swayed. Everyone here has made a GREAT point. I guess I have a lot to digest and think about. I love this forum because I have quickly learned my gut instinct/first choice is not always the correct way. Before the internet and forums like this I also learned my gut/first choice was wrong, but only through trial and error. This forum saves me from making the mistakes with my time and my money. anyway, Still lynski...you make a great suggestion about the groups, and also the "group in 3" rule. But I don't want it to look too contrived. Also, toward the end of the hall, I would need a runner (the 3rd/last runner) but there are a bunch of doors at the end of the hall...my master and guest bath on the right, and DD's room, guest room on the left. So, there would be no place to put pics down there. ahhh, so much to think about! lyban-WOW! see...I know that *I* love to look at family photos in someone's home. I can totally see why people would want to look at the walls of your hall! Ok, now tell me, and explain very slowly....how did you laminate on wood? I am not a crafty type of girl. Is this easy to do? Did you do it for any reason...as opposed to just framing? I am enjoying this thread and all the help. Thank you again...this is great fun for me!

@lynartist i definitely need a lighter console - when we moved here I had no style and I’ve slowly learned not to buy everything “farmhouse”. 🤣 The console will be replaced at some point but it will be a while. my pendant light in the foyer will need to stay too For now. With the foyer light I have and then the wagon wheel I showed in my great room pics, do you think the Lucerne will look good? I’m leaning that way. It’s a lor less modern than my foyer light. You’ll be able to see the foyer light and the hall lights at the same time which has me a little worried but I actually think the Lucerne may be a good “transition” from the more modern/bright foyer and formal dining, to the more cozy and relaxed great room. What do you think?

Get a beautiful runner for the floor; it will "lead" people into your living spaces. I'd also put up framed artwork down the hallway. A few inspiration photos: I think I'd also put in a different light fixture and get LED bulbs that are not so yellow.

Sometimes a floor plan helps to understand the segmented hallway layout.. show where any doors are and the reason for the color change isn’t apparent.. and why one opening will be closed up is also baffling…plus the cabinet doesn’t seem to be centered on the opening across from it?.. it is hard to judge where runner will work there…without a floor plan

There are lots of jigs and jogs in that one space, I’d avoid highlighting any of them. Move the two fretwork panels to the wall t the end of the hallway. Add a runner in a sisal, and a plant also on the end wall.

Will this be closed with glass doors? Otherwise you are making it more narrow.

You need a 'killer(wow)' piece of artwork on the wall that you see when you open the front door.

The frieze might look better - vertically placed.
