Landscape Design Drought Gardening with Stone

Dry creek bed??

Hi! I have a drainage channel at the bottom of my backyard. I always dreamed of making it into a dry creek bed. The channel is about 50 feet long and 5 feet across. Do you think this would be feasible? Also, does anyone know how much something like this would cost? Would it impact the functionality of the ditch as it is an hoa easement (I would need to get approval). Any advice would be appreciated!!

All it would need to look like a dry creek bed is stone laid out. Yes, it can have an impact on how the channel drains- having anything in there is a blockage. How much of an impact will depend on how the dry creek bed is done.

How much it would cost- you need to check with a couple local landscapers or designers that deal with things like this. It can vary from area to area, and with the upheavals in materials and labor timings for a while now that could play a factor around you.

Since it is an HOA and an easement. Check with them first on the idea. Ask them if you can do a dry creek bed there. They might say no, they want it clear. They might say depends and come back with plans. They might say sure, go ahead. Might even have contractors you can contact or they prefer you use for this kind of project.

Looks great. I need to do one as well to minimize runoff from our pipes into the neighbors yard. The space is narrow and has a lot of tree/bush roots. Most recs are to make it at least 2 feet wide. Will it still work if its only a foot or 6 inches wide?

Melanie, this 'dry creek bed' installed by the county to channel stormwater is probably something you don't want to mess with. Did the county line the swale with rip-rap (6-8" rocks) in the bottom and up the sides to prevent erosion? Check your survey and your county's real estate tax parcel records. They're probably on-line and viewable. The Feds have strict rules regarding stormwater channels, natural or municipally installed and most every waterway has 'buffers' that can't be disturbed. Look for the term " S.W.I.M. " which I believe is Storm Water Integrated Management..a buffer of specific width to each side of any natural or constructed waterway. Even if you don't have this restriction, there's no use trying to fight the leaves. They will blow off or degrade naturally to feed the soil and the trees.

Hi, just reading some posts, Cat Rowe, you should post a pic some day, and so should anyone reading this who has made a similar garden area. I was thinking of doing so, but, my area is right on a property line and, I would'nt be able to mow the area on the property line of I put a catch basin area for the runoff :( . It just would be too hard to cut the grass. I wish it was just a tad bit over on either his side (his problem) or my side my nice flowing runoff area. But, maybe next year we won't have all this rain, and there would be no runoff. So maybe that "dry creek bed" can be attained somewhere else, where I can accept that it will always be "dry".

Yes a picture would be much easier. In the picture this is looking up a hill. Its decieving but to the right of the drain is another hill. The tree on the left of the drain has a 4 inch root going under the drain. I need to do something here and because of the slope I can't go much further to the right and can't go deeper without cutting the tree root. Thats why I was wondering if that stretch I could put a pipe in the very bottom for unobstructed water flow, but I have never seen that done and can't find an example online. So that makes me wonder if its a dumb idea. Ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
