Preparing for cold weather
Comments (10)We had a hard freeze about 2 weeks ago, it got down to about 25. Some new growth was zapped. What I found was that any soft cane growth looked droopy about 2 days after, but rebounded. I did have some leaves that shrivelled up and had to be cut off. But nothing like last year. My roses weren't as nearly leafed and budded out like they were last year. And it wasn't as cold for as long. I did get some hydrangea leaves that are kaput and it took care of my Okame cherry blossoms, but everthing else looks ok. It has been cool and wet this spring so far. I can't believe it's April and I don't have a hint of a bloom yet....See MoreSpring IS coming, I promise
Comments (3)I think it moves about 100 miles North and 100 feet of elevation a week. I'm pretty sure that's what I read in a book by Hal Borland, a naturalist....See MoreSpring Photos
Comments (4)Love that magnolia! And all the critters in the garden. Spring is coming slowly here on the MA coast. About a week and a half ago, the first crocuses bloomed. Some of the pieris have been blooming for about a week, and daffodils are coming up a few types at a time. Behind the pieris, under the winterberry, are a few patches of scillas. One of my favorite daffodils is N. Lemon Glow, which usually blooms later, but I have a few right next to a concrete foundation and they're early each year. I wonder how your parakeet would get along with my grackles. I have grackles almost everywhere in the spring. Along with red-wings and starlings and cowbirds. Comments (8)Made it home last night and the first thing I did ( after hugging my husband) was to make a walk through the garden. Everything is much improved regarding the thrips. Some of my roses have some BS since I haven’t been spraying in order to let the Beauveria do its job. I’ll have to weed and deadhead today. Picking everything up in a plastic bag and disposing of it in the trash (thank you Jim). Here are some pictures from last night and this morning. Mary rose was planted last fall and it has impressed me. First one to bloom while it was still 50 degrees and nothing faces her. These are new blooms at their darkest stage. Earth angel is gorgeous. Band planted last fall and already around 2 1/2 feet tall and blooming. It has been in the 90s for a month now and she still shows some pink. Can’t wait to see her next spring. Iceberg in background. Front bed. The white in front is Moonstone. The tallest in middle back is Madame A ( love hate relationship with this one) Bosco making a come back and showing some bs. Carding mill gets bs, but it is very floriferous and I love it. Benjamin is lovely Darlow’s Enigma baby Ballerina is my best hybrid musk so far. Has grown 3 feet on her first season. I planted 2 buff beauties and 1 just died in its first week and the other one hasn’t done much. Kew gardens first season. I know I am going to love it. I planted it too deep, but It is doing ok....See Moreoursteelers 8B PNW
