Preparing for cold weather
Comments (10)We had a hard freeze about 2 weeks ago, it got down to about 25. Some new growth was zapped. What I found was that any soft cane growth looked droopy about 2 days after, but rebounded. I did have some leaves that shrivelled up and had to be cut off. But nothing like last year. My roses weren't as nearly leafed and budded out like they were last year. And it wasn't as cold for as long. I did get some hydrangea leaves that are kaput and it took care of my Okame cherry blossoms, but everthing else looks ok. It has been cool and wet this spring so far. I can't believe it's April and I don't have a hint of a bloom yet....See MoreQuestion about possible variegated sport
Comments (5)I will get photos here for certain but may be a couple days. I want to look at it again closer myself!!! If it is the case, should I cut out the main leader and the rest of this whorl. I am guessing there might be eight branches or so on this whorl (once again, I need to look closer) and some are certainly larger than the variegated one....See MoreSpring is coming...what to do with mini roses?
Comments (3)If the canes are still green, even under the soil line, then your minis are still alive. There is no reason to replace them. At the beginning of April (or, if you can find forsythia in your area, when that is is bloom), trim off anything dead, and start your fungicide spray. Even if there aren't any leaves, spray the canes. Keep up your spray according to the directions on the product. Blackspot treatment has to start before you see the disease, you want prevention/avoidance. If you wait until you see the spots, it is harder to treat....See MoreNorthern CA garden slowly coming from out of a serious slump
Comments (3)Lawn looks great! You will have a lot of family fun on that lush green grass. Three feet borders are going to be restrictive as most shrubs with any height also get wide. I'm in Sacto too. My shrub borders do fine with a soaking every 2-3 weeks during the summer (once everything is established.) I've got those old time black soaker hoses and then run the water very slowly for a few hours. With our restricted watering days, each hose gets its turn every 2-3 weeks! Select your favorite 3-5 small deciduous trees, some examples: Adirondack crabapple, Vanessa Parrotia. Do not plant those stinky flowering pears. Fall is best planting time for trees. Incorporate your neighbors shrubs by planting your trees in the blank spaces where you can't see theirs or where you need to block the view of a building. Then create a low maintenance calm green boarder with dwarf pittosporam, agapanthus, nandina firepower. You'll have your own private green haven back there....See Moreoursteelers 8B PNW
