Absolutely nothing. I've had roses blooming when it's 25°F at night. They don't open very well the next day unless it warms up a great deal, but they are perfectly fine when it does warm up.

The danger temperatures are considerably colder, and only apply to roses that are fairly well leafed out. We were below 20°F last night, and that wasn't a problem because everything is just starting to come out of dormancy. Where the real issues are is when the plants are, for one reason or another, out of sync with the weather.

Not to worry unless you experienced sustained freezes over a period of days or weeks like last year. You didn't mention your daytime temps which I presume to be well above freezing.
Right now our temps are into the upper 40s to 50s daytime and down to 30s and 40s nightime with some drops into the 20s. I have potted roses leafing out sitting outside where they stay unless temps drop into the low 20s or below at night. Those in the ground will have to suffer whatever the temps.

Thank you both very much for that. I feel better now. None of my roses in the ground are doing much more than showing buds of fresh leaves. No actual flowers. Just hasn't been warm enough during the day for them to wake up fully.

Karl yes day temps are getting to around 60. Might be somewhat warmer over the weekend. I do have several in pots sitting out back so I will bring those in that evening.

I don't think you need to worry, Kate. Even if the temps do dip that low it probably will only be for a few hours. They should be fine for that short time.

Most roses don't die until it gets down around zero...

Kate, you shouldn't need to worry. I'm planting dormant bare root roses now without problems. The temperatures are to warm during the day and it keeps the ground warm.

For anything growing in pots waiting to be planted, cover them on the very cold, clear nights with a sheet or a piece of thin plastic. That will keep the frost of off them and they will be fine.

Kate, that new growth may get nipped by the freeze but the rose will put out new leaves to replace them. The rose won't be killed but the foliage may be damaged. We had a very similar freeze in the past two weeks and it did damage the newest foliage but the roses are already trying to replace it.

We had a hard freeze about 2 weeks ago, it got down to about 25. Some new growth was zapped. What I found was that any soft cane growth looked droopy about 2 days after, but rebounded. I did have some leaves that shrivelled up and had to be cut off. But nothing like last year. My roses weren't as nearly leafed and budded out like they were last year. And it wasn't as cold for as long.

I did get some hydrangea leaves that are kaput and it took care of my Okame cherry blossoms, but everthing else looks ok.

It has been cool and wet this spring so far. I can't believe it's April and I don't have a hint of a bloom yet.
