I think it's a very cute room. How does your daughter feel about teal instead? When I was a child, I loved blue and hated pink. My mom agreed to blue walls and I was so excited. However, she said we needed to go lighter because "it will look darker once it's on the wall". It didn't. In fact, it was so pale one could barely tell that it wasn't white. I had to live with those not-blue-enough walls until I left for college. I was so disappointed.

SW Tame Teal

Wanted to show you an example and just found a photo posted by someone who must have had the same inspiration picture as you. Listed the color as SW Tame Teal. . .

Agree with ratherbeatthebeach--make sure your girl likes teal. I was a little girl who loved "normal" blue, and my mom always bought me aqua and teal. (Found out years later she was color blind and literally couldn't see true blue.) I was disappointed year after year. As an adult I love aquas and teals and won't go near a conventional blue. But I still feel sad for young me.

If she does like aqua, I'm very fond of Benjamin Moore Dolphin's Cove.

Why not let the child pick her own paint from limited pre-selected (by you) swatches? Then she won't live her life hating what you did to her room. Be sure to choose dark, medium and light shades. When I had cataracts, I could not see true color, and I'm sure some of my clients noticed!

She might like a Periwinkle blue go take her to look at Blue samples or bring blue samples home for her to pick the blue color

The child is 5 not 15. At 5 most kids notice if something is their favorite color, but mom's paint their kids rooms gray or beige or white all the time and the kids don't really notice or care. At 15, no matter what color you pick it will be wrong. Even if you let them pick the color, a year from now when they don't like it anymore it will be your fault that you let them pick the wrong color.

This is a bright, fun room that has lots of color to stimulate the young mind. As long as mom and dad and grandma and grandpa make a fuss and say it is the prettiest room they ever saw she will be over the moon happy.

if she likes blue why do teal? Blue is lovely.

Teal reads more green than blue to me, so get her approval before you begin. Teal is much much more intense saturated color than the light blue in your inspiration. Be sure that's what you want. As you can see in the pics directly above the saturation changes the mood tremendously!! Teal was greatly used in the 80s so it makes sense it would be doing an resurgence.

If you raised my 5 year old, there would be a price to pay if I fudged a color. My 5 year old knew her colors and Blue was crayola blue. Get a crayon box and pick out the blue shades. Ask her to pick the blue shade she wants on the wall. Even if you do just one accent wall, she got the color she chose. Happy child.

Whoa thank you everyone!! So yes, she is only 5. I showed her the picture and she loved it. I am just not sure how to find the paint color that will truly reflect the color in the picture :)

I loved that the picture is super fun and playful and if she suddenly decides she doesn't want a boy colored room next year, I won't have an issue. But regardless, she loves the picture! Just gotta figure out how to achieve it. Maybe my op wasn't clear enough that I was looking for actual paint name recs.

For the white walls, I would do wall stickers for the dots instead of wallpaper since I really don't have the budget for wallpaper.

At my house wallpaper also comes with the cost of professional installation; I have many talents, wallpaper ain't one of them.

Back to the real response: Have you ever looked into stenciling the walls? It's super easy -- just time consuming. Practice first on some poster board.

Best idea here. It'll assure you that you'll end up with a color you'll both love. Don't worry about her falling out of love with her favorite color. Painting a room, especially a small one, only "costs" a Saturday and a can of paint. I must've painted my kids' rooms a dozen times while they were growing up. No regrets.

OP, your inspiration pix is traditional-girly, and you seem surprised she prefers blue -- I think you're projecting a desire for her to be a girly-girl. She can be a girly-girl who prefers blue, but if you push her to be a girly-girl, you'll probably end up with a punk-rock tomboy. My girls both rejected pink in early elementary school -- they, like most of their peers, began to see pink as "baby-ish". One of my girls still hates pink (but she hates all warm colors /really does look better in blues and greens), while my other now loves pink again. But they're 20-somethings.

So we are actually hiring a painter, I am not doing it myself. You could call this picture my preselected swatch for her. 5 year olds don't understand the nuances of paint swatches, even adults struggle with it! Besides, she loves the color. I just need suggestions for a paint name that will mimic the color that she loves on the wall. Everyone knows paint swatches look different on the wall so I am trying to reduce my trial and error by getting advice from the pros who know from these stuff.

I think Dolphin's Cove is more blue than what you're showing in your inspiration picture, but it's a very pretty color. If you want a lighter color and an accent wall, have them cut it by 50% for three walls and use it full strength for the accent. Or if you want to go darker, move down the paint chip for a darker version - 724 Peacock Feathers.

I agree with that and it's actually why I like it better. I think she will be happy with stronger blue under tones as opposed to green. But I think it still matches with the pink dots, no?

Hmm maybe I'll do that 50% idea for my boys' room. but that's for a different day...

IMO she likes blue so what shade of blue? I am one who paints a very neutral white in young kids spaces beacuse next year her fave color will be purple maybe and you will be painting again. Use the color of the year for bedding, declas all kinds of replaceable things but not wall color.Take her shopping pick out bedding she loves and blue sheets then go looking for decals she loves . This is her room and right now you have taken the fact she likes blue and you have chosen the blue that IMO might not be the shade of blue she likes. I have done many kids bedrooms in my career and I always keep the walls neutral. so that the next new color is easily done.

We went a different path and painted her bed the Tiffany blue colour but the room is still grey. Then sue bought new art for the walls and is in heaven. She has a very dark bedspread half of the time but it’s all her choice. The bed was second hand and we sanded it and painted it. No regrets I think two years later maybe.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting she loves the picture I showed her. anything similar she will like also, she isn't the type that is a color guru. So she's been on blue for quite some time. What I liked about the original inspiration picture is it is blue yet the shade is girly which is safer for next year as opposed to the standard boyish blues.

I hear your idea to bring in the color on replaceable stuff. @WestCoast Hopeful you too. Hmm food for thought. I do think she would be happier with a full blue room.

So far the options on the table are:

1. benjamin moore dolphin's cove with a white wall of pink dots

2. SW Tame teal (or benjamin moore soft mint) with a white wall of pink dots

3. benjamin moore jack frost 729 with a white wall of pink dots

4. neutral walls with blue accents. BUT. I'm realizing my older kids will have their walls a color (they really want a color on their walls since they have had neutral until now) so I think 5 yr old will want color on her walls too.

BTW what would be the accent wall? the teal or the dots wall?

Thought the BM link below might help. I filtered for blue and there are over 500 shades. Seeing the differences may really help to narrow down and find out if your daughter wants a soft or bold bedroom. If you already have bedding or a rug, that may dictate color choice.

This room’s design is a bit whimsical, suited for a five year old, but something she may still be happy with when she’s seven or eight.

I love Jack Frost and Birds Egg. Painted our master bedroom Birds Egg in the last house. Considered Jack Frost but it went baby blue in low light. It's really important with these colors to paint a large test board. They have such a tendency to go baby blue or mint green at some point in the day.

@mcarroll16 I def hear that... I'm planning to order samples and paint swatches on the wall. I should probably mention there is only one window in the room. The room is quite small. I'd guess 8x10.

The color won’t be as important to her in the long run vs the accessories she will want and that’s where her personality can shine.

OMGosh that Ancona Blue is beautiful. Can't buy a sample, so I ordered the Farrow and Ball fan decks. Maybe I've found the new guest room color.

@Maureen that is a good point. Question- what are these test boards I keep hearing about? I just thought we'd paint a large swatch directly on the wall.

If you paint a test board instead, you can move it around the room, to see how it looks in the brighter spots and the darker spots. I like to paint test boards with white margins. I find the exisitng paint can really affect how I see the new color. Having a white border helps keep the new color "true." The easiest thing is to order a pre-painted swatch from Samplize or directly from the paint manufacturer, and tape it to a piece of posterboard.

That Ancona Blue looks really close to SW Aquaverde.

How fun!! All that's important is she is lovin it. I wondered when showing kids a picture and they say they like it--how do you pin point what they like or do they just like the affect? As we can read above different kids, different conversations can get different results.
