Placing a tub in a walk-in shower?

My wife saw this photo on a hotel website and likes the idea. Does anyone have any thought about this. We have 8.25ft length to work with . Currently the space is occupied by a jacuzzi tub in front of a bay window. Our designer suggested two shower heads, I guess one at each end. We were in agreement to give up a tub until we saw the picture and curious if anyone has done this or considered this. thanks

These are called "wet rooms" and they are often done when space is limited for a separate tub and shower. The pros are that they are space-saving. The cons are that every time you take a shower, you'll be spraying water all over the tub. If that doesn't concern you, then it may be a good option for you.

My first thought was where do you grab …to avoid a disastrous fall ?..and also i think a tub like this requires a lush rug to step out on…for the same reason…the tub says ….pampered …relaxed…luxurious experience ….setting says… men’ steam room experience

Do you have grand-kids, or are you expecting any near your guest bedrooms? If so, do consider having tubs (at least a small 5 foot inexpensive one) for baths. You won't regret that, especially for resale. As for your Master Bath, ask a realtor friend and they will likely tell you it's 'best' for re-sale for a 5-piece Master too, but if you'd much rather have the extra-large shower than a smaller shower and tub, then go for the larger shower and forget the tub. We have an oversized shower (dual heads, etc) and absolutely love it. We have a big jacuzzi tub too and it's nice but doesn't get a whole lot of use. Our overall bathroom is quite large, but if I were limited on space, the tub would be the first to go or at least downsize. As you age, you will probably find a better use for a walk-in shower with things you can add in your later remodel (hand-held rails, bench, etc) than a tub that is hard to step into.

It depends - You need to find the manufacturer's directions. My example - I have a Dreamline shower base and surround I'm installing and it says that the base goes right up against the studs (no drywall behind it). It also says I do not need green-board or cement board behind the surround area , since its made of two large pieces of fiberglass/acrylic. However, this installation would be a lot different if I was planning to use tile, or was building my own shower base. Bruce

You can always hang your shower curtain from the ceiling so that it spans the whole space. I like lori's setup. This is a very Japanese thing to do. You take a shower first and clean yourself completely. Get into the tub with a few oils or salt. Take a cold shower once you get out of the shower to get your skin tightened. A drawing of your space will be very helpful so people can give you ideas! Good luck!

gee, if you are planning to sell in the next few years and if it is the only tub or bath I would probably keep a tub/shower combo even though you would most likely sell to someone without kids, many people do love baths. If resale is not in the future do what works for you. No tub and glassed shower or wet room will feel much larger. My in laws in the UK just replaced their only tub with a walk in shower and will let the possible future buyers change it if need be. I just added a master bath and chose closet space and nice large shower instead of doing tub and smaller separate shower and have no regrets but we have a hall shower/bath combo.

If I was loving the idea …i would not want the glass enclosure or the tripping hazard..when getting out of the shower…

So you have 8.25 length but what width? And are you or your wife OK with cleaning that tub and the space behind it daily? Sabrina's first photo represents a large space where water is less likely to infringe on tub area regularly. Second photo has an actual tub deck and no space behind the tub. 3rd photo is zero entry shower and entire room gets treated like a wet area (some engineering involved). Lots to consider. It is a bit of a "trend" right now and with the right space and proper planning (and accepting maintenence requirements), it can work.

You want a 30K-60K wet room? Because you will need a top notch, technically proficient, and highly experienced, team to accomplish that. $1.98 bubba will rot out your house from the inside out.

I have seen many beautiful ones. The idea is that everything inside the room is waterproof. Therefore, is no problem fs the tub gets water inside while you are showering. I have seen seem, super fancy ones with double doors and also very simple with a glass pane. I have also seen them with an elevated tub. As per having a lush mat to step into, that is no problem either. Most of the wet rooms i have seen have a heated towel rack inside where you can hang a towel/floor mat. If you go into the ideas tab and type wet rooms, you will see many different styles.

Experienced a similar set-up at Kohler’s American Club Resort (in Kohler Wis., of course. Every room has a different mix of Kohler fixtures). Not a lux tub experience — no rug, can’t keep towels handy, wet walls and floor after showers, no art etc.

I think the key info you provided is that "wife saw this photo on a hotel website." Its a wonderful fantasy and doable for enough money. She'll be happier without it if you don't have a live-in housekeeper to maintain the area. Take her to a fancy hotel for the experience once a year without the regular cleaning and initial expense. You'll both thank me!

We saw them while we were in Japan. Not a fan, but at least we had daily room service to clean it all and wipe it down after every use.
