Foley Alabama Rose trail
Comments (5)Be sure to visit Foley's Antique Rose Trail in Foley, Alabama. It is conveniently located in downtown Foley and was established in 2007 by City Administrator Perry Wilbourne and volunteer Bill Goodwin. This lovely paved one mile trail features some 5000 roses in more than 500 varieties. Specimens include Marchesa Boccella, Arethusa, Perle d'Or, the Green Rose, and Mermaid. Gazebos and numerous benches offer peaceful spots to sit and smell the roses or picnic....See MoreRoses For Alabama -- Yellow? Red?
Comments (10)I did a search on HMF for Alabama gardens. A couple of them listed multiple yellow roses. Whether they spray them or not I don't know, but you could ask. Here they are: Jennifer & Jim Hughes http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=3.4905&tab=2&frmt=1&scp=0amp;order=4&qn=3&qc=42 Nancy's Alabama Rose Garden http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=3.5327&tab=2&frmt=1&scp=0amp;order=4&qn=3&qc=54 The Nancy above grows Sunsprite. A friend of mine in Arkansas (blackspot finds her area to be a paradise!) is always hunting for blackspot resistant yellows. She sprays (with Neem only) some of her roses and others not at all. I think she told me she grows Sunsprite, but I don't remember whether it needs any spraying. She was about to get Happy Child from Kaye Kettrey (also in Arkansas, has a large rose garden, and is favorite among rose enthusiasts in the area), who although in Arkansas, might know a fair amount about blackspot resistant roses in the South. Comments (4)Hi, Karen, Vics gardenkeeper was kind enough to remember my no spray garden in Huntsville, thank you, that's sweet of you. I posted here as duchesse_nalabama until we left the Huntsville area in mid Feb of this year to move to the PNW. It's not easy to move, so I completely understand your questions. I was very apprehensive about roses before moving to Alabama , but found it pretty easy, as long as I wanted to grow what grows well there! The antique roses that did the best for me were the tea roses and the chinas. I had not yet ventured much into the noisettes, but I suspect they would do well also, as Vics gardenkeeper mentioned. Where are you living now, Karen? If you have an acquaintance or knowledge of teas, noisettes and china roses, that will transfer to north Alabama easily. If you're coming from a zone 6 or lower area, things will be a little different for you. My favorites among the teas are Marie Van Houtte, Mrs. BR Cant, Isabella Sprunt and General Gallieni. Cramoisi Superieur and Spice, the Bermuda mystery rose did well. Beaute Inconstante is lovely. Ducher and Perle d'Or will do well. Duchesse du Brabant and her white counterpart, Madame Joseph Schwarz are great. Devoniensis is beautiful, and G. Nabonnand is also. Really, any of those old teas should do well. Mons Tillier blooms a lot and is a very healthy rose also. Others here who live in warm climates love Le Vesuve; I had just bought one before leaving and brought it with me. It is not in love with the PNW, though! I bet it would do well for you, though. Hybrid musks weren't overly happy in my yard. Some of the Buck roses did fine. The polyantha, Borderer and White Cecil Brunner were fine; I like polyanthas and wanted to try more of them there, but didn't get around to it. Some people have good luck with polyanthas in warm humid climates; I hadn't learned for sure how they really did for me. they love it up here, though! Faith Whittlesey, a cream colored tea from Roses Unlimited was bred in India for hot and humid climates and did really well. I suspect that most of the Viru Viraraghavan roses would be good there, but I don't have a firm opinion. There are lots of good mail order rose vendors in the south. The soil is a red clay - the roses will like it but I amended with a lot of local composted horse manure, which they really liked and fertilized with alfalfa pellets, either as a tea or broadcast around the roses. Let me know if I can help some other way or give you some information about others in the gardening community there. I lived in Madison, though, and am more familiar with people in that area. Good luck and welcome to north Alabama. Gean spring 09 north alabama...See Moregood roses for S Alabama
