What kind of wood do you make the beds with?
Comments (15)Hi all- I just purchased materials from Menards to build a raised bed. The anchores / posts are called Frame-it- All and the sides are composite (ultra deck). I saw this product on-line and was happy to find it locally. The sections are 4 ft long and you can build numerous configurations and heights. I'm going to start out with 4 X 8 X 12. I don't plan on double digging - etc. Just putting wet newspaper down and following a layered type compost filling that I read about in a book called Lasagna Gardening. This was a small investment, the 2 pack anchors were about 11.00 each and you need three, plus the same amount for the stacking hardware. The decking was on sale and the guy cut it for me : ) This is definately an easy project for a weekend warrior! An added bonus, you can move it around and change it if you want something different next year. Wish me luck!...See MoreIf this were your bed, what would you plant?
Comments (26)Oh, thank you all so very much for your kind and encouraging comments! I appreciate you all more than I can say! I fully realize my style isn't for everyone, but it screams "me", so I'm diggin' it. ;-) We love Mexico, spend about a month there annually, and I don't think I'd be happy unless I incorporated a great deal of the color and feel of the places we've traveled into my home. So there you have it. (And hey, if you think the exterior is a color riot, you should take a peek inside! LOL!) I'm really inspired to take the new bed in more of a cottage garden direction, and I think we can do that simply by planning for what blooms when, and filling in accordingly. (I'm getting some help on the Cottage Gardening forum as well.) Prairiepaintbrush, it's definitely lopsided with that awful old "marching-in-a-row" boxwood hedge! That may turn into our next big project, but we'll not likely do anything about that until perhaps this Fall. Pkponder, the rug is called a "Mad Mat" and is made from recycled pop bottles. It's super easy to clean, and feels nice underfoot. We were thinking of painting a rug on the concrete porch, but opted to try the mat instead, and I'm glad we did. It's definitely a keeper. Xtal, I had actually been eyeing these adorable little "fairy doors" online that you attach to the base of a big old tree! I definitely love yard art, and have been considering what I could use in the new bed that would be striking, and carry forth my "theme." Do you have any suggestions? I'd love to see what you've done!...See MoreWhat kind of porch would you put on this house?
Comments (5)I would want to change the gable -- enlarge it to peak farther to the right and to cover the door area. I'd carry that gable as far forward as you want the porch to go. You could put a skylight in one gable angle to keep your interior from being dark. Another possibility would be to create a "swoop" roof line starting from the gable peak and swooping in a curve to cover the door area. Then carry that all forward to form the porch roof. Even if you don't do a porch, I'd like to see you make your nice windowboxes the same width as the windows....See MoreWhat do you do with your bed pillows?
Comments (25)Lynn: really like your idea as well - at least they are hidden. Part of the reason for not having the sleeping pillows on the bed is they are not that great looking. We have TempurPedic pillows and the pillowcases don't fit them really well so there's a lot of material around that stick out at the sides and could show with deco pillows in front - don't really know yet. I don't want to spend a lot of time doing my bed either. Trisha: throwing them on the bedside rug is not an option. Lynn and Terriks: First, we won't have too much wall space due to a lot of glass for the view and don't want the TV in front of any of the glass. But, I don't plan to spend a lot of time doing work stuff in the bedroom and if I do occasionally I can listen to the news and if there is something interesting to watch I can stop for a few minutes. I think of my bedroom as a place to go away from work and chores and to relax - read, watch TV, sleep. In fact, I will need to put on ear phones when DH is in bed if he wants to read. Ironing and other chores will usually be done in the kitchen, family room, or outside. Thanks for all your ideas - Cheers!...See MoreBumblebeez SC Zone 7
