Will kitchen will be too plain? But don't want to go overboard
Comments (12)Thanks again. I am still not sure, of course! I really love antique lights. The one I'm looking at doesn't seem quite so fussy, I guess because it's old and weathered. I am considering other options, yes on eBay. Usually the hanging fixtures are used under a table or something,. This room has neither table, nor bar, nor island. pcjs - I've seen lots of shades like these, but no fixtures-only auctions in my searches! I don't dislike the schoolhouse ones, they just seem so expensive for something so plain. I have been looking at ebay, and the schoolhouse ones tend to go for more $$, I think, because they are currently very popular. Igloochic - I always wanted to tell you how much I love your lighting! I love old lights and need one for my dining room. I hope you catch that thread when I get a picture to post. I also really like that picture in the mini-bath - the cats in the tree - very charming!...See MoreUpper cabinets don't line up with Lower---Help!
Comments (29)Wow how awesome is the ability to photoshop! Elwydee's verson looks great! Think that's the same as the first one you did isn't it? Your 2nd verson with the added cabinet also looks great. From that angle it doesn't look strange with the ceiling change above. Nancy made a good point though. Maybe you could check out both of those isues with another mock up from another angle or simulate with some cardboard at home. RKB and Elwydee can you please share what photoshop software you used? I learn something new every day on this site! Thanks....See MoreWhat to do with backsplash when cabinets don't line up?
Comments (9)Ours doesn't line up on one side of our kitchen we are redoing. We are using subway tile for the backsplash so we got the half finished edge tiles for the end and lined it up with the top cabinet. The bottom cabinet and counter are about 6 inches farther out. I think it looks fine. Since you are on the end of a cabinet run then I would line it up with the top cabinet....See MoreStaircase balusters don't line up, is this normal??
Comments (44)Mrsshanye, I’m a retired architectural draftsman, and quirks like that naturally would really bother me, but not be noticeable by others. You’ve not been bothered by it for 9 years, so shouldn’t stress about it too much now. The reason all of this probably happened is because the builder used two different newel posts at the base of your stairs. As you can see by the photo, the post on the right is slightly different than the one on the left. They look similar, but aren’t - the squared off section at the base is higher on the right post than it is on the left post. In order to get the handrail slope to meet the left hand post at the necessary height for a handrail, (between 34-38”), the builder had to bring out the left post several inches. Had he just used two identical newel posts, this wouldn’t have happened. You mentioned that the heights were different and were above 40”, that’s okay, the newel posts can be that high, but the handrails that go up the stair shouldn’t be higher than 38”, and I imagine yours fall within those guidelines - although different heights. Since the mistake was duplicated in another house - it may be that that homeowner has the matching newel to yours, and you have theirs! They may have both been built at the same time, and gotten mixed up. And just because it was duplicated at another house doesn’t make it “normal” - it’s still incorrectly done....See MorePaul F.
