What to do with backsplash when cabinets don't line up?

Our cabinets are open ended on both sides and as of now on the one end the top and bottom don't line up exactly (bottom cabinet extends out a little more than the top cabinet). I really want a backsplash but don't how how it would look now. Any suggestions or pics?

Another idea...kind of like jterrilynn is suggesting, I think. I realized we had left out a 2.5" filler after our counters were in. I needed every last inch I could squeeze out of the open shelves above, but didn't want them to stick out past the counter. My contractor built this narrow cabinet that tucks under the counter overhang and is topped with butcherblock with slots for knives. Having the built in knife holder had occurred to me early in the kitchen planning but then just seemed like too much trouble, but it's turned out to be a great addition (and I think it covered the goof-up pretty well!) I also considered having a wine rack there, but I didn't have enough room. This is the best pic I have right now. Sorry-it was really taken to show the floor.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

What a charming house! You've done great. I had somehow missed this thread up to this point, and I did not read all (or even a significant fraction) of the previous responses. I have a 1910 house and also don't like subway tile. But I wanted something that fit the era of the house. I ended up going with a simple (and extremely cheap) 4x4 white field tile capped with a contoured molding tile (that almost but doesn't quite match the field tile because I couldn't find a molding I like from the a manufacturer that did a 4x4 field tile that was 4x4 rather than 4.25 x 4.25. Adds to the charm). I have very few uppers, though. I think a 4x4 white (or gray, since you seem to think white is too stark) field tile with black or charcoal pencil liner would be cool. These all show a pencil liner with subway because that's what the popular kids are doing, but it would work as well with a 4x4 or other basic field tile.

What goes next to the stove? No cabs? Just window?

Could the upper be adjusted? I'm curious as to why they don't line up.

There are a set of drawers next to the stove. That picture is showing the end of the set of drawers which are next to a window.

I don't think that the upper cabinet can be adjusted anymore...it is already installed and the microwave is next to it.

Not sure why they are off a little, but it is what it is at this point.

Could you add a piece of decorative moulding to the top cabinet to make it line up?

There is going to be a countertop on the lower too, and that will probably hang over the right edge making it slightly wider still.

I would wait to see how the counter looks before making any decision.

meowzer...that is a good idea.

palimpsest...I agree that the difference will be worse once the countertop is in. I really want a backsplash but don't want for it to look crappy.

oh no no I wouldn't leave it that way if I was doing it and I'm just a DIYer so there's no reason you pay for substandard work. Yes it can be done and I would insist they fix it.

Ours doesn't line up on one side of our kitchen we are redoing. We are using subway tile for the backsplash so we got the half finished edge tiles for the end and lined it up with the top cabinet. The bottom cabinet and counter are about 6 inches farther out. I think it looks fine. Since you are on the end of a cabinet run then I would line it up with the top cabinet.
