Hello moving into a home soon. Attached is the upstairs family room...furniture belongs to the current owners. I’m thinking about getting dark brown leather for this room however my husband suggesting gray to match the walls. I really don’t want the gray on gray. Need help/suggestions on furniture color and the set up of the room. Thanks!

Hi Katie, I'm Preksha and I've worked out a few layouts for you. The sectional you have currently is eating up a lot of space so I would definitely recommend breaking it up with a sleeker couch and a couple of chairs. Although it may be a little tight, placing the TV on the large blank wall and a couch in front of the slider gives the room some intimacy. I would also recommend adding a tall bookcase and a media console with some storage. I've also worked on another layout with the TV over the fireplace as @groveraxle suggested. You can add some storage on either side of the fireplace and replace the armchair that is now there if you would like more seating. You are well on your way. I really like option number two, the green floorplan. I would only add an extra end table on the other side of the couch directly facing the fireplace, turn the dining table so that it is perpendicular to the sliding doors (if there is room) and go with a island that is not curved. But that floor plan makes great use of the space. Opt for long horizontal floating shelves over a cabinet by your dining are as pictured in the other floor plans for a more contemporary/modern look if that is what you are going for.

I LOVE that you have windows on both sides of the room, so pretty! I do hope you will add a cushion to the bay window seat. In looking at the photos, I agree with others about giving each area separate functions, as far as seating in front of the fireplace, I would prefer to not have a sectional blocking off the side of the room where the triple windows with the lovely view, and it doesn't look like there is enough space to put the ”L” on the side where your entry is(?) I might like a sofa and a chair or two in front of the fireplace. Since it is a family room a dining table is a great idea as it would also be a great place for family games. Maybe decide on the blank wall after you get your furniture in, you might like long floating shelves, or decide you have enough furniture and all you need is a large piece of art. Have fun with this really great room!
