That space in front of the windows get such great light from the look of things. I think I would put a loveseat in front of the windows, a chair next to the small window, and a rug with table in the center of that area to make like a reading nook or a separate gathering space. I would also want to be putting plants everywhere in that area, but that’s just me.

You will get more responses if you show dimensions of the room. You can do it on paper and take a picture of it. Show all windows and doors, door ways, etc.

I agree table for games/eating would be lovely under the sky light but not sure you want desk and table book ending your space.

Well- anchored floating shelves on the wall or shelf unit on legs to leave the heat vents open are easily found.

I feel as if I would divide the total space into 3 separate areas and deal with them individually due to the ceiling heights and doors involved. #1-mudroom/bay window=put in a small but cute dining table since you have no other; #2-LR/fireplace=make this into your main seating with couch; #3-desk/work area=place your desk against the front wall under sconces and place a comfy chair in the back. LOW shelving under the windows can provide storage and make it into a reading nook. Rugs will anchor each area also.

Once you figure out a layout, if possible install a floor outlet so you can float some pieces or to accommodate different rearrangement.

Definitely get rid of black around fire place. And get rid of horrid black floors - go with Armstrong VCT in that area - lasts forever and many color choices - can make a pattern like checked or border or other. Paint the walls a warm shade that does not clash with the floors like the current grey paint does. Then look at photos of LR in magazines or online and see what you like and go from there. Your room is large enough to have good options, but get the room ready first with paint and fireplace colors as it is horrible as it is. Cushy comfortable furniture is good and not ugly modern cold uninviting stuff on the market now - it will be out of style soon - go with classics that never go out of style.

I agree - define this to 3 spaces - the window gets a dining table - instead of s desk at the end tie in a buffet table for serving storage- arrange a love seat and couch aroind the fireplace anchored with a rug with a soft ottoman for your toes- consider an open screen thst ”hides” the entry but lets light in - there are some lovely inexpensive ones on etsy- make sure you find a low storage for the mud room - shoes etc - great space enjoy !

Where does the door right next to the fireplace lead? It looks odd since the other door right next to it is completely different.

We are changing that door to match. It leads to the kids playroom above the garage. The door to the right of it is a closet.

I wholeheartedly agree with that allisonkrause, if you have some constructive advice offer it, but the unnecessary criticism is unnecessary. Just because you have different taste to the poster does not make your opinion valid. As I was taught as a child if you have nothing nice to say don’t say it! Allison you have a lovely home with tasteful choices for your background. It is a great neutral, fresh palette. Many posters have offered useful suggestions. It will be lovely.

I really like Danielle Whitmore’s idea about three distinct spaces. I love the dining/buffet idea with the lights. One thing to consider is how often you’ll use your dining room, since it does’t seem near to the kitchen. Our house is about 6 years old and I can count on one hand how many times we have eaten dinner at the table (and ours is open to the kitchen).

I might consider removing the door to the loft, along with the closet next to it, but it really depends on how the stairwell looks and how much money you want to spend. It’s a beautiful space so I’m sure it will come together nicely!

I LOVE that you have windows on both sides of the room, so pretty! I do hope you will add a cushion to the bay window seat. In looking at the photos, I agree with others about giving each area separate functions, as far as seating in front of the fireplace, I would prefer to not have a sectional blocking off the side of the room where the triple windows with the lovely view, and it doesn't look like there is enough space to put the ”L” on the side where your entry is(?) I might like a sofa and a chair or two in front of the fireplace. Since it is a family room a dining table is a great idea as it would also be a great place for family games. Maybe decide on the blank wall after you get your furniture in, you might like long floating shelves, or decide you have enough furniture and all you need is a large piece of art. Have fun with this really great room!

Don't give up on the idea of a bookshelf, if its something you'd enjoy. There are options that may work with the baseboard heaters - these are both from Room & Board.

I always do a scaled room out of card board and cut out scaled furniture pieces so I can easily play with them in the flat cardboard room. Even if you don’t have the furniture yet you can cut out the sizes you ar3 considering and know from at least a floorplan perspective what works. Then use imagination as to 3d view….or alternatively master one of the software programs where you can do the same and it will generate 3d. Very very useful. Good luck!

Have you ruled out putting the TV opposite the fireplace? You won’t get the optimum viewing height if it’s mounted over the fireplace. Two facing couches, though, really only allows for two people watching the TV. Also, I’d consider just painting the slab doors to match the wall.

There is no wall opposite the fireplace unfortunately; it is open to the kitchen

You might want to consider building a short wall to divide the entry area from the main space and have a place to mount the TV at a better height.

Check out Mantle Mount. It allows the TV to be mounted on a moving arm that can be pulled down for viewing and back up when not in use. We love ours! It gives us the best of both worlds.
