Big Blue Lake-cheater first bloom because it is on a new Floyd Cove plant. My garden blooms are still a few days away.

Summer Romance rose

Peony bloomed all buds at once this year

Dianthus has been so pretty

Judy, you know full well that you are among fellow addicts when it comes to buying plants. And I so love the English roses...just be sure to give them plenty of room. They will need it. Vel, it is a record for me, that is for sure. It was one I got in the fall from Bill Maryott, but no way was able to resist taking pictures of those three together. Thanks Cindy, all of my early clematis are covered in buds. They are hapopy with the strange weather. Rebecca is a true red in my garden...same color as my monitor, and the blooms are large. Dumortieri is know for being very early, Rita. It has a very unusual trumpet shape, it does look like a lily. Jean, I remember you talking about snakes! I've never had that problem, had to move a couple of huge frogs out last year that were eating the fish. My peonies are full of buds this year. I have a couple in bloom, Julia. I have a bright pink one blooming right next to my Daughter of Stars, really bright together. Thanks for the comments everyone, that first daylily bloom is really great :)

Jennbenn, Yep, this plant was grown from seed that was planted in spring of '02. The original cross was made in '01. My wife(cannahavana) and I got to do some hybridizing that year at my mother and step-dads place, the plants that we have at our place now are the ones that we selected from a group of a few hundred original seedlings we had. Generally speaking, it will take around two seasons after planting seed to get a bloom. First bloom is often not quite as good as the plant can do though, so the third season, after the plant has a had a little time to mature, is the best bloom. Thats when we selected the seedlings that we have now, on their third bloom season. This year I am going to do some hybridizing on these plants to try and start my own lines. Thanks all. You know they always tell you to cut off scapes on new plants but I usually leave them on to be sure the plant is true.

Nancy, that mahogany iris is the one you sent. It has really done well. Thank you. By the way, temps are in the 90s next week so blooms will begin to pop!

How long have you had Summer Romance? It's a Kordes rose, is it not? Did you get it from Lowe's? Happy with it? Like those richly colored iris.

Big Blue Lake is gorgeous. The irises are all lovely, and I love that red dianthus. I lost three of my perennial dianthuses in the front. I guess that bed stayed too wet for them this winter.

I know, Brad. It goes against the grain for me to cut off scapes too!!

Debra, sorry about your dianthus. You had some really pretty ones, I remember. So far all of mine have come back, both the mounded ones and the tall spreading ones.

Mantis, I don’t remember where I bought Summer Romance, quite possibly Lowes. I got it and another Kordes yellow whose name escapes me. I have had them maybe five years. I love Summer Romance-if you like old English type blooms and fragrance you will like this. It is a healthy growing rose. VERY healthy!! I need to hard prune it next year to get a better shape. Here are pictures of the rose after a few days and the bush itself. It is about 8 feet tall.

I have lost all my perennial dianthus, most lasting several years. I think maybe they have a limited lifespan. I keep meaning to get more, but the local places don't seem to have such pretty varieties any more.

Mantis and Nancy - When I grew dianthuses in barrels, they lived for many years (7 or 8). The ones I lost in the ground had performed well for two to three years.

I like your rose Summer Romance. Roses were my first love, and it was sad when I removed my last one from my garden this year. I just don't have the time to spray any longer, and blackspot runs rampant without a regular spray program here. Give your rose a sniff for me. I love the lavender roses in particular...............Maryl

Maryl, I understand about the roses. I once had well over 100 as they were also my first love. But as you say, the care for them was not fun. As they died one by one due to many reasons I did not replace. I now have only 23. However, when I read about these Kordes I declded to try them. I have never sprayed Summer Romance. As I walk around looking at my roses today most have blackspot but Summer Romance is clean and lush.

Beautiful pics, thanks for sharing those. Very cool daylily. Hardy Perennial Dianthus? hmm. (switches tab to investigate) those might be fun (reads on about lifespan, etc.) or not.

Unless you get the scape right away I think you are wasting your time cutting them as the plant has already invested a lot of its energy. Unless you're growing the daylilies for their foliage. Although, daylilies might be different as the buds swell over a long period. Regardless, that's the rationalization I'm going with to enjoy the flowers ASAP. Not that I have an issue with instant gratification whatsoever.

I don't know how I missed this, but glad I saw it finally. That is a lovely first bloom...really pretty! And the iris are gorgeous!. The first and the last of the iris tie for my favorite; just the colors I really like! Summer Romance is a gorgeous thing too.

I don't know how I missed this post, but then I can walk by an FFO and not always notice it. I'm glad I finally spotted it. the first bloom is a gorgeous thing. Love the iris, but the first and the last ones are so especially pretty. Summer Romance is a true winner. Such a lovely bloom and black spot clear.
