I own a Waffle Weave cotton shower curtain from Pottery Barn.....but.....I found it at a thrift store for $6! I'll put it in one of the rentals if one becomes available....and if you look at the photo....a little short is fine.

I think it is a lot more likely to shrink from the dryer than washing. If I am concerned about something shrinking I line dry it.

Why not ask the seller?

I wonder how practical a natural fiber shower curtain would be. I can imagine it staying wet would lead it to getting funky smelling in some days. And having it dry indoors could add a lot of humidity to the house.

But I have no personal experience with it. Rose, many people don't have clothes lines.

Yeah, I don't think I'd put it in the dryer. Yeah, Elmer, I do dry things on a rack sometimes. I used to have a line but occasionally the birds would sit on the sheets and do their thing. Ugh. I have a nylon liner which stays on the inside of the tub and the other one goes on the outside. I do wonder if the linen would look wrinkly because I'm pretty sure I would be too lazy to iron the thing.

Interesting tidbit on Linen. when it gets wet the shape of the fiber changes. Linen fiber is naturally round and ironing or actually pressing it will flatten that fiber and give it that classic sheen and drape. The moment it gets wet it returns to the round form and wrinkles. You have to press it dry to get it to drape properly again. I dont know if they have some sort of treatment that gets around that issue. Otherwise you can have nubbly textured linen made of short fibers not intended to have a sheen. That would shrink I suppose. How much depends on the twist.

Well, I ended up orderin one from Company Store. I'll let you know how it is.

Unless it has been pre-shrunk, linen typically shrinks 10% after washing and going through the dryer, and it also tends to shift to one side slightly, depending on the weave and the twist of the yarn. I have bought linen that does not wrinkle, and again, this depends on the weave and the twist. This type of linen is difficult to find, but it makes the softest and most comfortable shirts, and I simply hang them to dry when they come out of the washer. The spin cycles gets almost all of the water out, and so they dry quickly. The last linen shirts that I made have to be ironed, but only lightly, if they are hung to dry from the washer.

I made a lot of linen clothes in the 1970s when no one else (that I know of) was making pre-shrunk linen clothes, and if you bought linen clothes at a store back then, the tag would say to dry clean it, which is ridiculous. The only linen clothes that should be dry cleaned are ones that are lined - the rest should be made with pre-shrunk fabric. I made my brother a linen vest lined and backed with cotton batiste, but I was careful enough when making it that he could wash it and line dry it. Both the cotton and linen were pre-shrunk. I made him matching slacks and both the vest and slacks had to be ironed, since they were suit-weight linen. I did not line the slacks, and so they could be washed.

Like cotton, linen is a cellulosic fiber, which means that it is hydrophilic and therefore stronger when wet. This is why it is better to wash it than to dry clean it - the dry cleaning chemicals will weaken the fibers.

I have bought a few old Irish linen tablecloths that I originally intended to use for making clothes, but I have not been able to bring myself to cut them up!

I have a really stupid question. Since my shower rod is not bolted to the wall, I move it up and down as needed. A tension rod. Is that what you have? Doesn't matter what length my shower curtain is, as I just make it skim the floor.

Yes, that's what I have too. Because I didn't want any of the original tile to break over my original (read: large!) bathtub, we still have the darn frame for the previous glass sliding doors. I hate that thing, but put the rod up over the top edge and it stays in place. I don't care if the curtain shortens, as long as it doesn't flip into the tub and get wet.

I have linen shower curtains and I've never seen shrinkage.

I live in an arid, dry climate. Never had a problem with too much humidity. I LOVE natural fibers.
