how far up should backsplash go?

Our kitchen is under renovation. I’ve drawn in it to give you an idea where things will be. No uppers at all. My question is how far up should backsplash go? Thanks

You could do the same material as counter for the sink area but a tile behind the stove.

You have a perfect kitchen for a stone countertop with a short backsplash. It would let your windows be the star of the room. Backsplash 2"-6", same stone as the countertop, with taller piece at the range that extends up to the hood. Something like this:

Thanks for all the input so far! Suzannesl, yes, don't worry! The floor (and the layers underneath!) is already up. We are planning on putting tile down, likely beige. We are raising the existing cabinets but I'm planning on refinishing them with the Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations, likely in Espresso, and adding brushed nickel hardware. Hmm, interesting comment on the mix of colors - I didn't think about that and will have to take another look.

I completely agree with you, jerzeegirl. Isn't the whole point of a backsplash to protect the wall behind the countertops? I think it would look even siller to have that much counter hanging out there past the cabinets and backsplash. But I also do think it isn't very good design to have the top and bottom cabinets not line up when all you have is a stretch of wall on the other side or some other feature that acts as a natural stopping point. So I like the idea of adding shelves to the end of the top row of cabinets. Then there is no question about where to end the tile.

does hood go up before backsplash?

We added our backsplash after the hood.. Not ideal I know, but we moved in in Jan. and didn't install the backsplash until last week. It came out great, and I couldn't be happier with the way it looks.. But just today I was thinking, what happens if we need to change the hood.. Now I will have to redo the backsplash on that wall.. Oh well.. Wise move to do it before if you can!

In the bathroom with my pivot mirror, there is 12” from the bottom edge of the mirror to the top of the vanity counter. In the bathroom with my oak trimmed longer rectangular mirror, there is 9” from the bottom edge of the mirror to the top of the vanity counter. You have to see at what level your mirror looks best above your counter. It depends on the mirror length and how you want it to look. I think you have to personalize it for each space❣️

If you do floating shelves around the window, I would recommend the backsplash to be up to the bottom of the first shelf. If no shelving, up to the window sill with matching countertop material or just a washable paint. Full height Tile to ceiling at range would be nice too. Of course, it also depends on what materials you use what I would do with them. I attached a photo of the look that I have been enjoying and the 1st comment was suggesting creating a focal wall.
