what rotation scheme do you use, if any?
Comments (12)I do rotate crops mostly for the help it gives in controlling pests. So many pests lay eggs in the soil and I do not spray....This is not to say that plenty of folks don't get along without it. They do. Anyway, my rotations are fairly simple because I garden in 9 raised beds. I do not mix "families" in the beds and rotate them all on a 3 year basis. During fall and winter, I only use 3 or 4 beds so it's really easy to keep them rotated. All the other beds are planted in a cover crop each winter. I have the book you referred to and I read their system with interest. But I thought it was enormously more complicated than just rotating plant families. One tip I have picked up along the way...I do not plant solaneaceaes and brassicas in the same beds in back to back years. Both are beloved by flea beetles which will proliferate in the soil when they have a steady diet. This I learned by accident and then found it confirmed in a Fine Gardening article....See MoreDo you use fertilizer and if so, how do you apply it?
Comments (1)An average loam soil will have 4000 pounds of nitrogen, 4000 pounds of phosphorous, and 20,000 pounds of potassium per acre in the top eight inches most of it in forms that are unavailable to plants. Many minerals present in the soil are most available to plants if the soil pH is neutral to very slightly acid. Soil in my region is neutral. We do not run fertilizer through the irrigation system. If your irrigation water is alkaline, you will have to adjust it to increase soil fertility. Your county ag agent is your best source for information. We use organic mulches and green manure crops for soil fertility. We do use bone meal at planting time on our large dahlia crop. But, hey, I think we need to use alfalfa like LizaLily because we want 100 blooms per day on our Chilsean's Pride dahlia. In correcting deficiencies of minor elements, it is important to realize that the difference between a therapeutic dose and a toxic dose is pretty small for some of the nutrients. Essentially, what we use here in the Great Lakes Region is probably going to have no bearing on what someone uses in your area. Talk to growers in your area and your ag agent. We have received valuable information from both....See MoreDo any of you fear the types of plastics you use?
Comments (1)I found what I was looking for. I have only gotten to the 3rd post or so. But the search for safe plastic has definitely been discussed. I still have to look into glues and pumps. I don't know if gutters will say what they are made of. This new world of hydroponics for me is so fun. The link below is internal from this site. But it is off to a good start for me. Sorry for the first post. I am sure all the old grey haired hydro vets in here get tired of the same questions. New people... sheesh. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/1421415/leachates-from-plastic-containers?n=20rd...See MoreDo any of you take collagen?
Comments (8)A bit of a rant here, just a forewarning. I've been using the Great Lakes collagen from Trader Joe's. I'm on my second (maybe third?) can. The only noticeable difference so far is my hair seems *somewhat* thicker, and I may just be wanting to believe that. Not sure if it's worth it. Like artemis_ma, I make a lot of bone broths in my slow cooker and bone broth is now readily available in stores. With all these "superfoods" I'd rather focus on what I eat than take supplements, although I do take a few supplements that work for me. And what constitutes a "superfood" changes based on influencers that have no real stake in our personal, individual health anyway. The link above, for example, is just affiliate marketing. Not that what these bloggers write can't be good information. But take a look at what a superfood claims to do--I may already be getting those benefits from another source. Reishi? What is that even? The claim that it provides stress relief, immunity and longevity? I'm eating and doing other things in my daily life that are providing those benefits. It's all so overwhelming, which is why I'm not 100% on board with the collagen trend. I also thought this recent article was insightful in how food/supplement trends can be shifted. Rant over....See More
