Design Dilemma Garages/Workshops Remodeling

2 car garage addition. Need help with ideas

I would like to have a 2 car garage with living space above attached addition built where my driveway and shed is. I’m looking for ideas on how to attach to the existing house and be able to access the room above the garage from the upstairs. My house is a cape with a 1/2 story 2nd floor. I’ve attached pics.

We have several of these structures in our neighborhood - the best ones have likely been designed by an architect as they thoughtfully match the style of the primary home (roof structure, windows etc) - but you may also be able to find plans online by searching "cape cod style garage"

(**edit: just realized you want to access the top portion of the garage from the upstairs in the home - so you want to build an addition to your home that includes a 2 car garage? That would likely need an architect who is skilled with older homes and enjoys those types of projects (not everyone does) - we had several contractors pass on our addition/renovation project bc blending new with old is a PITA)

I would be very afraid that the garage with what you want would overpower that house. You need an architect for sure and why access to a living space so maybe explain what the living space will be. IMO your house has too many roof angles and what ever you add will be both complicated to design well and very expensive . Get an architect , make sure you can do this in the property you have since sq footage is an issue on most city properties

Hire an architect before you do anything. Nothing is worse than when people slap an addition on (especially a massive one like you're describing) and don't account for how it's going to affect curb appeal.

If you incorporate the existing garage closest to the house as a porch, then, if you add your two car garage with its door(s) facing the same direction as the door of the house -- not the direction of the existing garage door(s) , you could also extend the right wall of that garage several feet in front of the existing garage and create a shelter/overhang over the existing garage doors that lead to the front porches -- the one created from the existing garage adjacent to the house that could be connected to the smaller portico at the front door of the house. Driving in, you'd not even see the remaining garage door behind the new 2-car garage. You could connect the two garages with a door. If you like the style of your home ... if you want to keep true to the original design of your home, contact an architect to design your porch and garage addition. Putting up just any porch roof or even a smaller portico roof might not turn out as well as it could.

The door by the laundry in the first one would lead to a small courtyard in our side yard. We don’t need access to it but it’s kind of unused side yard space otherwise, so we could link to it and turn it into a nicer area. We do have a powder room in the other part of the house but it would be nice if this one could also be accessed by the main area (doesn’t need to be in the nursery). We have a king size bed, and ideally the nursery could eventually hold at least a full size bed if needed. The French doors lead to our backyard and we want them to be accessible without being in the master. The connection to the house is on the side of the kitchen by the pantry. It could potentially move east (up in the picture) but we’d have to reconfigure the pantry and a closet in the existing house. I’ll draw up another picture that shows what’s inside when I get back from vacation next weekend. Thank you for your help!

The garage height would be around the same as the house. Plenty of room to add.
