slab cooktop backsplash - which comes first: hood/cabs or slab?
Comments (6)Thank you so very much for your responses! (I've been distracted with the fact that I started this kitchen plan with a beloved 42" copper hood, and now, after my kitchen design choices for material, it seems that the copper doesn't "fit in" anymore... :( I really like my fabricator. Is there any harm if I have him install the backsplash first, and then install the hood/upper cabinets/molding? Or what happens if I find a good fabricator says he can do it in 1 piece, but during install, the marble breaks/something -- is he at fault? Then he would have to get a new slab, yes? Again, thank you very much. Amanda...See MoreHelp with quartzite slab identification - Karin_mt?
Comments (5)Not sure if this helps but we installed a quartzite in our kitchen and love it. Zero maintenance so far(year ago). We did have the installer seal it and I think it’s supposed to last at least 10 years if I am remembering correctly. I actually feel like it was a 25 year sealer but I don’t trust my memory. I cannot remember the name. It was an additional $180 I think. No etching or staining at all and I do not have to be careful with it like I did a honed marble in our last house. I couldn’t test it either but did smear an oily hand moisturizer on the slab at the warehouse to make sure it wasn’t porus. It was not. I love my slab and would 100% buy it again. I think with the quartzite the more white they are the more they may have a certain mineral that can etch. Mine is a creamier white base and I can literally leave lemon juice, red wine etc on it and it doesn’t leave a trace of a mark. Good luck!...See MoreSlab backsplash help!
Comments (3)I would take the backspash to the bottom of the window sill. If you take it up to the bottom of the cabinets, you’ll have to get extenders for your electrical outlet boxes, and pay more for the slab and extra cuts to accomodate them. I don’t think the extra cost would be worth it for the design value of another eight or so inches of backsplash height....See MoreNeed help: prefab quartzite slabs, flat eased edge with laminate
Comments (3)These slabs are pre fabricated on three sides. The same vendor will template, fabricate and install the slabs. The quote looks good. The existing island slab in the photo was there when I bought the house. I don't know anything about the installation process. It is 1.5 inches thick. The new slab, which is the one on the bottom of the slab photo is fully laminated. It measures 1.5 inches across. This seems to me somewhat a waste of materials. They essentially glued two 3/4" slabs together and sold as one slab. Am I missing something?...See Morethetzone
