Looking for approximate cost for hvac system.

Trying to determine approximate cost to replace electric forced air furnace and ac unit for 2200 sq. ft home in central florida. Any input would be appreciated.

call dealers around you, that have the brand you are interested in, and ask. Does your house already have the ducting, or do you need all that too. Once you have decided on a dealer and a brand, then they will come and give you a complete estimate.

Pricing is very regional. What may be a good deal at one location may not at another. Also, now isn't the best time to buy anything. But if you must, call around at least 5 dealers and ask for a quote on an apples to apples basis (may be very difficult).

This is my first post on TGW. I will be the first to say that my experience with Trane is very subjective and anecdotal, but the following experience is mine nonetheless. We bought an existing single story 2280 sq. ft. home in Auburn, AL in May of 2012 (15 months ago). One thing that sold me on the home was the presence of a Trane 14SEER HP with variable speed blower installed in 2007. In June, one month after purchasing the home, we had to call the local Trane company to come out for a non-cooling situation. By August, we had replaced (due to actual failures, not just "failing") the compressor, the blower motor, the blower motor circuit board. All but the circuit board were under a part warranty. However, with labor, freon recharging, etc. We shelled out over $2600 in 2012 alone. In March of 2013 we had to replace a startup capacitor, not under warranty, for $400.00. All told, since June of 2012 (this post is made in early Sep 2013) we have spent well above $3,000.00 on this Trane HVAC system. In that time, I have learned (from an independent, well respected local HVAC guy) that our system is woefully OVERsized. We have a 5 ton unit in a space that, I believe, calls for a 3.5 ton unit. We have $500 power bills in the summer months. In general, I think Trane makes a great product like BMW makes a great car. You should just know what you are getting into. The most urgent comment I would make to anyone buying a Trane is to DEFINITELY get the maximum parts and labor warranty you can get and make sure it's transferrable to a new seller. I have a half-ton window unit that with large floor type fan cools 1200-sf per/ton in 100ÃÂ°F weather. On July 18, 2011, as reported on WI Public Radio; very near me, Prairie du Chien, WI had a Heat Index of 127ÃÂ°F, yes, 127ÃÂ°F Heat Index! All shades pulled, etc., my little Half-Ton first floor A/C cooled all rooms to 76ÃÂ°F or 77ÃÂ°F & and rarely above 55% relative humidity; with good air movement, -- totally comfortable all day. The same for the up-stair's less than Half-Ton window A/C, cools my bedroom, hallway & bathroom; I use a Wind Machine 3300 to move the air throughout the rooms, both on first & 2nd floors. If everything is design-engineered perfectly it is possible that a 3-Ton A/C could cool a 3600-sf home. Here is a link that might be useful: Optimizing a Room A/C

Thanks David.We live in Northern Lower Michigan, just above the 45th parallel. We do not have Natural Gas and Propane is our fuel source other than electric. My understanding is that we will seldom need the back up heat. The boiler set up seems like it will give us much more control over the basement climate and an endless supply of domestic hot water but it also seems like it will cost us a lot more in the long run vs. something like a Marathon Electric HWH. I also should say that your number is higher than any of the three I have gotten so far. This makes me less comfortable with the lowest number as I see many warn about cheap installs!

I also live in NJ and I am familiar how the Clean Energy program works. I have to be honest I don't care for it. The contractors quote a high price and then the state comes in with a rebate to bring it back down. The result is you are usually paying an inflated price. The hook is you have to replace your water heater and add insulation at some very high price. So the quote is $17,662 minus the $4000 rebate for a net of $13,662. For this you are getting a 2-stage Infinity furnace and a single stage AC, with a water heater and blown in insulation. If $2000 goes towards the insulation leaving $11,662 for the equipment and installation. If it were a 2-stage AC I would say you are at the high end of the price range, for a single stage it is over priced in my opinion. You can try what Tigerdunes has suggested, but I am confident the dealer will not go along with it. Do you need a new hot water heater? Paying $2800 for a hot water heater is absurd. Realize that this will be a vented model which will not operate during a power outage. With the low price of gas even they are estimating a 40 year pay back. You will be lucky if the hot water heater lasts 20 years. I think you can do much better with pricing. Get a quote from a Carrier dealer who doesn't participate in the program. If you need a hot water heater you can buy a basic tank in Home Depot for less than $500 plus installation. If you have R30 insulation in the attic, then adding more is probably not going to have a big impact (look at the payback years). Attic sealing is good DIY project. Put the money toward an attic hatch or make one yourself. Finally not sure about the $4000 in labor. Installers will rarely quote labor charges, or even breakdown the price by item.

When it comes to HVAC, now is probably the worst time "ever" in history -- to replace an HVAC system.

Why? The industry is right at the cusp of changes that pretty much effect upwards of currently 70% of what is made now.

By the end of the year everything made now the left overs, the stuff that doesn't comply will be illegal to sell in Texas --Florida probably won't be much different. Part of this is due to DOE changes to what efficiency standards are going to. SEER to SEER2, they changing the calculation to these efficiency requirements.

To make matters worse... R410a -- a refrigerant that has been used for just over 20 years now, is on the chopping block. Prices are already up over 300% since middle of last year or so.

Equipment, what can be found the prices are up across the board. If you can find it and need it you better buy it before someone else does or do without. The world has changed from what it used to be thanks in part to a perfect storm.

Now if your view is that R410a systems are likely to be better than anything these manufacturers can produce looking forward for the next few years due to what is likely to be refrigerant wars breaking out among mfgs and you want to try to skip all that nonsense of what is coming... then find a system that does what you like now... because what is coming *could be* one hell of a mess.

If your system develops a leak, pay someone with skill to fix the leak. Interesting times we live in right now. History... like it? hate it? Make your voice known and I may include your opinion in an upcoming video on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL

You should budget at least $8K-$10K for a replacement. The price will vary significantly based on the equipment you choose. It seems the installation costs in Florida tend to be less compared to other parts of the country. But that may have changed given the current supply and demand problems. Multi-stage variable speed equipment is going to be in the $10K - 12K range.

Do you know how much it costs to heat your 2200 sq. foot house? It might make sense to install a heat pump instead of an electric furnace. Heating with a heat pump will about 1/3 the cost of an electric furnace. The initial installation costs would be higher, but you would have reduced heating costs each year.
