what to put on walls next to fireplace

Dilemma trying to figure out what to put on the blank walls next to the fireplace. The existing picture is not staying. Our style is more transitional and we are having a tough time coming up with a good plan for those spaces that work well together. Thanks!

For your sake, I wish the tv were placed to right of firebox, just above the bottom shelf.

Because wall of windows is nearby and tall as the "mantel structure," might be ok to hang items on the structure, and not at its sides.

I would start by painting that whole upper part the same color as the fireplace, including the big white part. Ending it will be awkward unless you carry it onto the wall in the balcony. Or maybe add more paneling the full length of the wall, and paint it dark. Then you could end the dark paint where the paneling ends at the balcony rail.

The TV is way too high, so I would move it as suggested, but if you leave it there, if the wall is dark, it will help by it not standing out so much against the light wall. Then you could hang art where the TV is.

Thanks for your suggestions. I went to Heirloom last weekend and looked at several climbers. Dublin Bay (a sport of Altissimo as well) was absolutely gorgeous and even though it doesn't have much of a fragrance, I was very impressed as Heirloom doesn't spray and it seems to be very disease resistant. I also bought The Impressionist and an Eden at the 1/2 price sale. Whatever am I going to do with these? A true addiction. But once I saw the latter two, I had to have them. I was at a friend's house and they had a built in similar to yours. They had the TV on a sliding shelf in the built in and pulled it forward for viewing , but then had the option of pushing it back all the way and actually had doors that shut to hide it. That may be overkill to close doors to hide the TV, but it looks like you could have a retractable shelf in your built in for the TV. Can you do without the loveseat in the room? I think the loveseat interrupts your flow into the room, both physicially and visually. Instead, how about moving the chaise where the loveseat is and maybe getting a nice upholstered swivel chair to put over on the fireplace side which could be turned to face the TV or the fireplace. It could be placed close to the couch and angled in so it doesn't block the fireplace. Or, if you aren't set on having a chaise, an upholstered swivel chair could be placed on either side of the couch-nothing too big. That would leave the entryway less blocked. I think that would made the room look larger. I really like to look into a room and see an unblocked expanse of floor all the way to the other end, if possible. With a chair on either side of the couch with a small table between each chair and the couch, you'd only lose one seat from what you have now. If you really want something to recline in, consider a smallish lazyboy for one of the side chairs. We love our leather lazyboys. Also, I would move the grouping as far back toward the breakfast nook as possible. I love the built ins, the fireplace and the glass doors out to the deck. It's going to be lovely when it's all furnished.

What can I put on the walls or next to the tv?

I’m thinking the TV needs to be mounted about 6-8” below the window with a lower side to side 12 to 18” floating shelf or very wide simple sofa table of some sort that can have baskets or odd-shaped containers below. Plants or artwork reaching up along the sides of the TV...something to give the TV a wider framing as it’s a bit small. For drapes if you must have them, I’d do floor to ceiling subtle colored to disappear into the wall. If glare is a problem, maybe inside window pull downs.

I would want the two sides to be symmetrical. So I’d either do benches or built ins. And I’d move the piano. Maybe in front of the window. But post some more pics so we can see if there are more options. Very pretty room!

Thank you! Painting that color is a good idea! Unfortunately moving the tv isn’t possible as it’s built into a recess to specifically fit the tv.

IMO the art on one side and the TV on an articulating arm on the right and done BTW the recess can hold another piece of art .

The white paneling doesn't seem to go with the fireplace. I think the TV is way too high. I know it would be some work, but I would move the TV to one side, remove the paneling and hang a great piece of photography. I found this one one on Allposters.com.

Could be the photo, but proportions and balance feel off: fireplace opening and tv feel really small, and the molding and wall colors are not working with each other or complementing the stone; creating a really busy wall.

Before deciding on what items to add, consider the entire wall, so it’s not as broken up and busy.

I’d paint brass on fireplace black and given hearth is awkward, suggest accessorizing to help offset. I’d paint the molding (tv will disappear) and the side walls a deep grey that complements the stone. Can’t find good examples, but hope pics below help with imagining a more harmonious/impactful wall. It could be stunning and more modern.

Then look for wall decor; suggest wood to help tie in the mantle and especially the two shelves that feel lost. I found acoustic panels on etsy (all kinds of designs are available) that would be real statement pieces. Be sure of the right proportions, so first tape out sizes on wall.
