Proof reading is a thing of the past. I would move on too.

Many of these products come from foreign countries and the writer of the description has a poor command of the English language. I find them amusing. I usually don't buy the product as they are an off brand I never heard of and often have poor reviews. Funny nonetheless.

"I figure if you can't use or edit the correct spelling, what does that say about the product?"

For me, it says nothing one way or the other. Do you have the same attitude about people when speaking to someone who speaks English with a heavy accent?

I am with you, orchid. If they can’t be bothered to use correct spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure, I’m not buying. Hire someone to make sure it’s correct, for goodness sakes. Pay attention to detail.

If the product was something I wanted I would not be put off by poor grammar, spelling or English. Poor English by a foreign speaker is better than I can do in any other language. I'd like to have even a poor command of Spanish, French or someother langluage.

depends upon the product -- if it's something I know is produced from overseas I can give the grammar a break. But if the person or company has a presence here or another English-speaking country, yeah spelling and grammar are important (but not necessarily a deal breaker).

Seriously, if it's from another country, text may have been translated by an algorithm, and they may have no idea whether it is grammatically correct or not. Far more important to me is whether the ratings and reviews are good.

If you were doing the same, would you always know that the translation was correct?

FWIW, Hubby always says that when he hears someone speak English with a foreign accent, that tells him they know more than one language, which he does not.

Here’s a different viewpoint: I try to buy American-made (USA-made) products when possible.

I'm afraid this has turned into English speaking, non-English speaking, American made, etc. viewpoints, which was not my intention. Whether the product is made abroad or here in America, I would imagine a business would want to make sure a proper description is submitted of their product. My only point was proofreading.

I think your expectations, with the current state of education, might be a little lofty, lol! Even those earning their livings from writing don't seem to be able to use proper grammar or spelling, or provide editing for those things. I cringe whenever I look at newspapers online, or a media outlet with a print version, etc. It's truly abysmal.

I have moved on from product descriptions with poor grammar. I make no apologies.

carolb -- I love your DH. I have often said the same about folks who can speak/write any English when it is not their first language. Anyone who can is miles ahead of those of us who know only English as our first language.... no matter how they express themselves. <<<hugs>>>>

I wouldn't want to pay to develop a product, then allow a sloppy sales pitch to doom it. That's just poor business practice -- nothing to do with ESL struggles. 'Trying' isn't good enough in commerce.

I think a lot of those descriptions come from people who don't speak much English and I find the little quirks kind of charming. I also appreciate bad spelling in the subject line of phishsing emails since it acts as a tip off not to open it.
