I've moved a big one successfully. My rule of thumb for relocation of large plants/trees/shrubs is October/November in NC. I've never had a failure, even with rose of sharon, hydrangea trees, and recently a huge climbing hydrangea. Good luck...claire in sanford

I've just gotten seeds for the above plants. Can anyone give me some tips on starting and growing them?

Seed Collecting: Let the seed pods dry out a bit on the plant. Then you can open them to collect the seeds. Hope this helps. Grow from a Seed Step 1 Prepare your seeds. Purchase a packet of Carolina jessamine seeds from your local nursery. Soak them in water overnight. Step 2 Plant your seeds in individual cups filled with garden soil. Be sure to plant the seeds in late winter if you want to transplant to your garden in the spring. Make sure there are holes in the bottom of the cups for water drainage. Step 3 Water regularly and make sure they get plenty of sunlight. Put them in a windowsill for excellent light exposure. Step 4 Acclimate your plants to the outdoors before you transplant them into your garden. Set them outdoors for a few hours everyday, increasing the time each day for a week. Step 5 Transplant to your yard when the vines reach 6 to 8 inches in length. Plant Your Carolina Jessamine Step 1 Purchase your Carolina jessamine from a local nursery if you did not grow one from seed. Look for one that has healthy green leaves and is already blooming. If you cannot find one at a local nursery, look for an online nursery that will ship one to you. Step 2 Choose where to put your vine. Full sun is best, although it will bloom in the shade as well. Carolina jessamine is a climbing vine, so plant it next to a fence, trellis, arbor or even a mailbox. You also can use it as ground cover. Step 3 Plant your Carolina jessamine by digging a hole 6 to 8 inches deep depending on the size of your vine. Fill the hole with garden soil and be sure that the roots are completely covered.

Here are some suggestions. Crossvine (bignonia), which is a native. Aristolochia elegans (Dutchamn's Pipe Calico Flower) Confederate Jasmine "Madison." these grow fast but they are not likely to bloom in the shade, unless your trees are tall enough for it to be "light" shade. Please DON'T plant English ivy, as it is extremely invasive and will destroy trees and invade your neighbors' lots. I personally love Carolina Jasmine, but it will tend to spread along the top of the fence, a lovely clump. You would need to work with it to get it to grow low on the fence, as it will seek the light. To some extend this is true for everything. I have seen people use a climbing hydrangea in your circumstances too.
