Can someone please ID this clematis?
Comments (8)Wendy, I guess it depends on the vigor of the plant. My Ms. Bateman is an early bloomer and vigorous and gets brown leaves after the bloom. So I cut it down completely to the base. It avoids the brown leaves stage and is covering the trellis in no time. Thats the only one I do that too now. I have mostly Group 3's and my other 2's don't bloom that early in my climate. I no longer have Pink Champagne. It was kept in a pot too long and didn't make it one winter. After seeing these pictures, I think I will have to get another. It is lovely!...See MoreCan anyone identify this clematis please?
Comments (7)I was told by friend of previous owners that it was clematis. To be honest I am not sure if leaves change colour. Not a dramatic change anyway like the red leaves on that plant when I checked it out on google images. It does lose its leaves on autumn/winter. Sorry for vagueness of Info but I have only recently taken on the job of gardening!...See MoreCan someone identify this vine?
Comments (8)There is much confusion with this vine. C. terniflora - Sweet Autumn Clematis - is an Asian species that looks almost identical to C. virginiana (similar flower shape and fragrance, similar bloom time, same subspecies grouping) except for the first having smooth leaves and the second having toothed leaves. Clematis paniculata is a New Zealand species that is quite tender - certainly not hardy in much of the US. Although they are sometimes used almost interchanageably, C. paniculata is NOT an accepted synonym for terniflora - they belong to two separate clematis groupings (C. paniculata belongs to the Forrestii group; C. terniflora belongs to the Flammula group), they bloom at different times of year and belong to different pruning groups. The flowers are not even very similar except for color. Vines want to grow UP - that is their nature. You can train SAC along the top of a fence or wall and it will drape to cover some of it but if there is something more vertical for it to grasp onto, it will. I guess it could be used as a groundcover if given a slope to cascade down but give it plenty of room and nothing else in its path. It WILL smother it!...See MoreYellow leaf color on Clematis?
Comments (6)I have a golden colored clematis called Stolwijk Gold. Yellow or golden colored leaves are highly desired in this type. See what I mean! They are primarily grown for their beautiful foliage. Friends who visit my garden are more exited about this clematis than the flowering ones! LOL....See Moresubk3
