need ideas for painting bookcases
Comments (3)A picture would really help us give you a good answer. Just based on this tiny amount of information, I'd glue some of that narrow wood (or what is it made of?) trim that looks like rope up the front side edges. Then if there's a place for it, I'd glue some type of wood medallion or fancy trim to the top center. Then I'd sand the rest lightly, fill in the knot holes, prime it and paint it. Hard to say what color without seeing your room or knowing your taste. One choice would be to paint it white and do some cute fabric or wallpaper on the inside back of the shelves. Another choice would be to introduce a jewel tone, like bright red, green, or blue. Of course, with any color you use, you can do a cute colored or patterned back. You can paint the inside back of the wood. OR you could cut a piece of matt board to fit the opening and decorate it one color/pattern on one side (winter?) and another on the other side (summer?). That way when you get bored you could change it. I recently did a whole thread on that... see this link... Comments (9)Oceanna, I'm embarrassed to show you the rest of the room. I've pondered over the past couple of years how I could streamline my office, but I can't find a single thing that I don't need. There's even a small desk that serves as my makeup station. My style is, um, eclectic. The thing is, and it's probably heresy in this forum, this room is beyond a style at this point. It simply needs to be functional. So, I could just go, it's all mismatched, embrace it! I've done that for the past 10 years, and we all know that eventually you stop seeing it. I just figured the bookcases are an easy thing to address. Maybe painting them will make it all look worse. I really like the look of baskets on shelves for storage, but it might not work for me, as I have books on one shelf, software and inks and DVDs on another, paper on another, plus craft items snuck in another. While they are technically bookcases, they actually serve as open shelf storage. There's not room for a single display item to be found, except for some framed photos on top. This room has 7 power sources, labeled A through G. When I dismantled everything for the painter, I diagrammed which cord/cable went where. Putting it back together was painless (and gave my poor brain a rest)....See MoreWhat is so great about Ikea Billy bookcase?
Comments (42)We got an estimate for built-in bookcases in our living room recently - $8K. I found Billy bookcases available in the color (white, which is really off-white), height, and combined width that they fill the same space almost perfectly. $220! We just got them this past weekend. No, they do not look as good as built-ins would in our old house, but they provide us with the shelf space we need while we save some pennies for the real thing someday. Or not, if we wind up moving first. Also, I had a slight hesitation about built-ins for resale purposes because the room is somewhat narrow and a future owner might want to arrange furniture differently than us, and built-ins *could* become a liability. We drove 2 hours each way to pick them up. That's the first time I've been to Ikea in probably 15 years. I don't remember now what the shipping costs were but they were a significant percentage of the cost of the bookcases themselves. Slate had an article about Ikea delivery recently. Comments (12)Thank you everyone! You know, it's a bit reddish on my monitor too. ;) IRL, it's a hot, hot pink. It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look intentional either. I'm leaning toward a deeper red to tie into rug an and artwork. Matching the bar stools is still an option- and I even have the paint for that, but something about red is speaking to me. I think this is essentially the color palette of the area. I'll have to get some color chips today....See MoreKaren Hath
