That's great. The idea to to get it hauled out. If you have underpriced it, I would look at is a way to help someone else.

For future pricing, can You research items and sees what comes up price wise?

We had a friend tell us recently that Craigslist is for "old people" and not used much anymore. I have to say that it doesn't seem to be popular like it once was. My husband owns a small business and we are sometimes in your shoes, just having equipment, etc. that he would like to get rid of, not necessarily make money on. He had two items recently and I listed them on both CL and MP. CL was a complete bust and he got so many "scam" emails. It's ridiculous. MP (here at least) is another story. I pretty much love it. One thing I particularly like is if I am selling something or even buying, I can look at the seller's profile and funny, but a few times (buying/selling) it's come up that I know friends of the buyer/seller and once had even met a buyer (her daughter dated a good friend's son LOL). She bought a small coffee table from me. I really like that aspect because then I don't feel so leary about letting someone in our shop or garage (I never let them in the house, unless it were someone I know). I have bought a few antiques off of FB, real deals. I always have a list of "saved" items, things I "might" want to look at.

Are the FBM people local? I always wondered about listing there, as I don’t want to ship, I just want to deliver or have someone pick it up, whether at my house or some neutral location.

My dad sold a tractor on CL. Someone drove from PA to IL for it. A year later, Dad had found the tire chains for it, and they came out en route to somewhere and bought those as well.

Like you 2Katz my DH had equipment at their business that needed gone. I listed something for free on FB and got several people interested quickly. Unfortunately many of them had no way to transport said item as it was big and heavy. A busy contacted me and paid for it and had a trailer to come and pick it up. Win all around!

I buy and sell (mainly buy, sigh) on Facebook Marketplace. I like that it’s local, I can kind of get an idea who I’m dealing with just by their FB page, and it’s easy.

We stopped using CL years ago. Most of the activity is too far away from us, and we got tired of dealing with scammers.

I’ve had all good experiences with MP and in fact have kept in touch with people I’ve met on there.

My FB is as anon as one can be, no photos, friends, etc … so when inquiring about something, I put my real name in the message as well as the main street I live near. It helps the sellers know I’m legit.

Incidentally, I've received no response to my CL ad - no surprise. I guess you can get an idea who you're dealing with on FB assuming most are not faux characters like me. 😊

@bpath Marketplace is local but you can sell or buy shipped items also. I sometimes look at area near me too.

I have a real FB account (no picture, just an icon). I have no reason to be private (within reason of course!) as I have the account to keep up with friends, relatives, many students I worked with, etc. I belong to two local community groups, a gardening group, etc. I don't put things on there that I wouldn't want "anyone" to see.

Glad you had a good response from MP and hopefully the transaction will go smoothly. Where we used to live, CL turned into a scam-fest even before we moved. I was able to sell a few items for our move but had to wade through all the crazy scam responses. Prior to that I loved buying and selling on CL. I want to like MP but have not had any luck with it at all for the types of things I want to buy or sell. DH has had success selling and made a few purchases but we've had to drive quite a way for those. That's part of the issue since this is a much smaller market than our previous home. An expanded search area is almost a requirement here. I know some people will buy things from the pics alone and Venmo the money to the seller sight unseen. I can't operate like that.

Our neighbor wanted to get rid of a palm tree. His gardner was going to charge $100 to remove it. A friend sugggested he advertise the tree on Facebook Marketplace, he sold it for $150, buyer removed the palm. Definitely a useful site.

I've had good luck buying and selling on MP. Lately there have been a bunch of data collectors, people who immediately say 'I'll take it' and then ask for your address/phone# (with no intention of buying) , but those are pretty easy to spot/avoid.

I imagine the optimal classifieds site depends on your region. We have a digital version of classifieds from one of our local news companies. It's been around in some format since at least when I was a child and went digital sometime around when I became an adult. That's used far more than CL here. I haven't tried FB marketplace because I refuse to use FB. I've acquired a lot of case goods through our classifieds. The prices are far better than what you'd find in a vintage or consignment furniture store. Plus the deal works well for everyone: I get the furniture I want at a reasonble price and the seller gets some cash for whatever item they don't need anymore. I've bought furniture from people wanting to generate some cash for Christmas presents and people going through divorces and trying to get rid of a household of furniture.

I think it just depends. One never knows. I had a nice albeit totally inappropriately located deck at the back of my last house. It was a nice deck, just not nice in that location. I wanted to tear it out and put in a patio, which I ultimately did, but I couldn't see wasting all the treated lumber and value of the old deck. Also, I was not much into "deck demolition" and I would have probably had to pay someone to do it or at least help. I didn't even have a screwdriver with enough torque . . .

So anyway, I put an add in the local paper advertising it for $50.00. FB was just coming on the scene so it and Craigslist were not big players at that point. This was also before the big lumber shortage, but still. I was just hoping to find one person who might want it. I ended up getting 50 yes FIFTY calls about it. I had to go "first come first served" so I also kept track of names and numbers in order. They guy who got it came with his nephew and disassembled it all for me, and carted it away in his truck. Took him a couple hours so I ended up saying "we're good" on the 50 bucks. I know I lost a bunch of money on that deal, but it was worth it to me for the deck to be gone and being able to get going with the replacement.

I am a big fan of the principle of Craigslist, FB Marketplace and also Freecycle. But yes, it is possible for it to be a avenue for some contact with weird and unpleasant people too, so you just have to develop a system.

A little OT, but I belong to a local moderated fb group with features local event and sales advertisement, plus requests for recommendations. It's kind of weird, because some folks on there will just post to see their own posts I guess, they will post information that is total baloney, to put in nicely. Like tell you someone or someplace sells something when they do not and never did, not even close. You can get sent on some wild goose chases that way . . . so that's tough, separating the wheat from the chaff . . .

Our CL is heavily used! I rescued my first cat off CL. I got my FREE coffee table off CL. I've picked up boxes of iris tubers for mass plantings! 🌼 Any place that will let you list an item for free is going to be popular!
