Sewing Room = Starting from Scratch
Comments (10)How exciting for you to be getting your own space! It's really a nice thing to have. I was fortunate enough to get a craft room in my new house (which I insisted I get the SW corner of the house for maximum light). I outfitted it with cabinetry in a U shape, similar to how my office at work was laid out. It has a closet for storage. In addition to shelves, I had a box built into the corner of the closet to hold bolts of fabric upright. (Can't see it in the pic...it's to the left of the closet door.) I kept the old maple dining room table which is on wheels and has a flip top, so I can flip it down for cutting and layout, then flip it up and roll it against the wall when I don't need it. I had the electrician put the outlet for the iron on a switch so I can just flip the iron on and off as I'm back and forth when I'm sewing, rather than have to do it with the dial on the iron. (In the middle pic, you can just see the foot of the ironing board...it's on the left as you enter the room). I also was sure to have room for full length mirror on the wall. The flooring is a heavily cushioned sheet vinyl that is very durable, very easy to clean and soft under foot as this is in our lower level and is on the foundation concrete floor. I had the electrician put in a lot of light as well as it's a work room. We also bought an armless office chair that adjusts in height and leaves my arms free for maximum movement....hate it when fabric gets caught on an arm or the arms get in the way and you can't pull the chair in close enough. Please keep me posted on your room...I'd love to see how it turns out....See MoreStarting from scratch in my family room
Comments (12)Thanks for the ideas! I have had such a hard time with this room. LL, that is quite similar to the arrangement I have now, but I have a table with 4 chairs on the left side. I really even have barrister bookcases on either side of the smaller window, just as you drew in, :-) but I have chairs in front of both bookcases. I always want to center the couch on the big window, but it seems to throw off the rest of the arrangement. Akt, I like the idea of a backless bench in the center. Hmmm... I do have to keep a walking path open to the DR, which is part of the frustration of this room! Patrick, I'd like for us to eat meals in the dining room, but it will rarely/never happen, except for maybe dinner, when we're home for it. I have a sports-obsessed DH and DS that must be able to see the TV, grrr! I only need a table for 3-4 in this room. We also do projects, homework, etc at the table. I have considered getting rid of the table, but I'm sure it would result in them eating on the couch! Uncivilized savages! :-) I typically sit at the island in the kitchen for breakfast/lunch, but they don't. Cyn, YES. I could not agree more. However, that would be way, way down on the list of budget priorities, and will only happen in my fantasy world :-)...See Morestarting from scratch/help me put together this room pictures
Comments (6)The rug is nice and goes well with the art work which is your starting point. I would suggest to buy the furniture first (if you haven’t already) then buy the rug. Furniture is the most expensive investment in a room so it’s always good to plan for it first then go from there. This will help you in two ways.....1) Furniture layout in a room will help you decide on the correct size for a rug.... 2)If you are planning to add accent chairs in the mix then you are not limited with the style/color of the rug. Hope this helps....See MoreStarting from Scratch in a small Multi-purpose room--HELP!
Comments (18)Maybe first decide on how much and how deep the storage has to be. Are you planning to build it in or freestanding? Then the soft furniture. I'd likely end up with a short (< 78") and deepish low sofa (besides the usual suspects check out Interior Define or Article) with a bench seat and two comfy chairs with arms. No one really wants to perch on a seat like the chairs used in the first pic above. Lastly, the small tables etc. Your small (by modern US standards) room could really be a great introduction to your home and your style. But measuring and planning ahead always matters most in these spaces. Of course, you can also get the most impact from colour in them,too;-)...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
