What are some rhizomatous begonias that get large?
Comments (3)There are so many that it would be hard to name some of the major ones. B. popenoi is a very large one (one I do not have). B. nelumbiifolia (water lily begonia) can get extremely large (over 2 foot across at the Miami Fairchild Tropical Garden conservatory). I have this begonia but it might approach a foot across. I have 'Caribbean Queen' and 'Caribbean King' that get to be quite large for spread and height but the leaves may only get a foot across. The biggest one I have is B. 'Challenger'. The biggest leaf approaches two foot across and the longest petiole is close to 2.5 foot long and the diameter is almost an inch. A huge shrub would be 'Paul Hernandez' but since you asked about rhizomatous I will stick to that category. The largest one appears to be B. parviflora from S. America although if you search for Sao Tome begonia it may be the world's largest (but no mention of it among the societies it appears). World's largest begonia? B. nelumbiifolia at Fairchild Tropical Gardens C. King at Fairchild No ID on this one at Fairchild Another unknown at Fairchild My C. King in 18" pot My C. Queen in 18" pot The rest are Challenger in a 15 inch pot and looks like it needs to be potted up. There are two other begonias in the same pot and the leaf size on these two are around 6 inches. The lens cap is 67mm (around 2.6 inches)...See MoreIs this begonia suffering from some sort of disease?
Comments (1)Did you recently plant it? Is it getting full sun in the heat of the day? Is the soil wet, dry, or somewhere in between? I see no disease - just a lot of wilt which may be from too much sun and not enough water or the roots are rotting due to too much water....See Moresaving begonia tubers- some sprouting now
Comments (3)I have one Non-Stop begonia and at the end of its season last year I just stuck the pot under the sink in the guest bathroom after leaving it in the garage long enough for the stems to dry and be removed. I forgot about it until today so I added a note on my computer reminder program to check it annually on April 1 . Here it is what it looked like in 2014....See MoreBegonia ID
Comments (1)It is a cane begonia for sure and is under the superba type. Similar to Sophie Cecile or Lana but probably neither. I received a cane from a member in our club that looks more like the cane above. She called it Ina Mae or Ida May or something like that. If you go to Brad's Begonia World, he has some excellent advice on pruning, propagating, etc. Some nodes are where flowering structures emerge while all the other nodes is where a growing tip comes from (I didn't know this until I read that from Brad's Begonias) so it is important to recognize these two different type nodes before cutting. http://www.bradsbegoniaworld.com/canes.htm...See Morewestmichiganflorafau
