New front door -- need some opinions!
Comments (22)mtn, I love the glass too and want to respect the architect's vision. Your point about the darkened entryway is a really good one and the main reason why a solid wood door is giving us pause about changing it out. What do you think about the option below? cksquared, thanks -- hopefully I'll be able to do a proper reveal in a few months once the kitchen is finished. ellendi, the FedEx guy has seen me in a towel on more than one occasion. The house remains very private from the street, but once you are in our driveway or entryway alcove, you can see into the main living areas of the home. petepie, thanks for the link. They have some amazing doors! yillimuh, we don't currently have any wood on the front of the home -- it is siding and the square stones. But the exterior is going to get an overhaul in 3-5 years including painting, replacing the siding, etc and we may add some slatted wood on the house. arapaho, I think that glass door would be a good compromise! olychick, yes -- so many people find our sliding glass doors confusing as our front entrance. teacats, thanks for the inspiration -- some really cool doors on that site. thanks annie, joanie, patricia and msrose! The issue with replacing the sliders is that installation of new sliders is a huge ordeal -- we can't retrofit them as the new Fleetwood doors have a much larger profile than our older doors, so significant structural work would need to be done to replace the sliders with similar glass doors. It's a huge, expensive job. So we're considering moving our front door to the front of the alcove below where the header is and where the pebbles start (this is an old photo with the previous owner's drab curtains drawn): and putting in doors like this, either wooden or painted (?): [Modern Entry[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/modern-entryway-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_741~s_2105) by Sausalito Architects & Designers Quezada Architecture We would then take down the existing sliders and just make an interesting transition from the "outside" to our foyer. This option would give us a place for us to remove our shoes and put a fountain. We could still use glass doors and it might give us slightly more privacy. thoughts?...See MoreNeed opinions on front door color (pic heavy)
Comments (22)Thanks for everyone's opinion! I originally was thinking black, because its classic and I love it. However, my house is not classic. No matter how much I want it to be - it just isn't. Anyway... I literally took the fan deck out this morning and tried to find the shade closest to the existing shade on the doors and trim. Closest shade to the existing color on the BM fan deck is Waynesboro Taupe. It has more grey in it than I thought! What if I stay on that paint chip, and do the soft grey black color at the bottom, Dragon's Breath?? Horrible name, I know. I looked for Murkey Turkey and couldn't find it. LOL I could do browns too, the roof has plenty of brown in it, which is my main hesitation for doing the black. I was originally thinking this would be easy. I'd just do the black, since its in the brick. Now I'm concerned it would be competing against the overwhelming browns in the shingles. Maybe a grey-brown? Comments (30)I'm brand new on the Home forum, just wandered in from the Garden, so hope you won't mind me adding my two cents' worth. According to the Feng Shui book I have, the best colors for a south-facing door are bright green, dark green, blue, purple or black ... so your forest green sounds like a good choice from that perspective (so was the eggplant suggestion). One word of caution, though: Check the warranty on the door carefully. When I wanted to stain our new front door (also south-facing) a deep brown our contractor pointed out that a dark finish, whether painted or stained, would void the warranty on this solid wood door, as it absorbs so much heat. After several years of a plain white door (not bad on a house with dark brown natural cedar shakes, but it just didn't feel "right") I painted it a soft sage green and added a brass kickplate and love it. The sage blends with the entry foyer, living room and dining room and is a perfect backdrop for the various wreaths throughout the seasons; a brass kickplate really does dress it up unbelievably. Your house is classic, adorable and so well-kept; it's going to look charming when you get your plantings finished, but don't rush it ... are houses and gardens ever really "done"? Ours are still evolving after 29 years. I'd agree that softening the foundation and adding window boxes, hanging planters, and cottage-style gardens would be lovely, as long as they are in keeping with your preferences and lifestyle. Enjoy the process! Looking forward to seeing your "after" photos next spring. Diane...See MoreNeed advise please, trying to find a front door color.
