I would think so too. To me smart casual means the same thing as business casual - so no jeans, no sneakers, no t shirts, that sort of thing.

With different professions being represented you will have the gambit of outfits being worn including jeans (black or blue) with a sports jacket and dress shoes or if some have being working from home for the last 18 months they might figure that washing their Lululemon and wearing a tunic top constitutes smart casual. I would wear slightly dressed down from what your profession wears but had some colour.

Nice slacks, top, nice cardigan or sweater or unfitted jacket. Flats or low heel. Yes, brunch wear. Then see what your superiors and well-regarded co-workers are wearing after awhile and dress similarly.

I went to the financial advisors office and was rather surprised to see how causually the men and women were dressed, more like they were going to the mall.

I'd err on the side of too dressed up rather than too dressed down, because you say traditional business attire is important in your industry.

No shorts either.
