fireplace makeover

I recently bought a house and would like to update this river rock fireplace. Ideally I’d like to replace it but with all the work this house needs, it’s not in the budget at the moment. I was thinking of painting it a solid white. Keep in mind that the surrounding walls will also be painted a very light color (Benjamin Moore, Athena paint color). I will also be removing the track lighting above it and making into a pot light and adding a rustic chandelier where the fan is. My inspiration is the picture attached, however I’m also open to suggestions.

I would paint the walls first and then reevaluate. I bet it will look a lot more harmonious without all the red. I like the rock color!

Those consoles are great btw. So use them elsewhere. I love that you already have electrical. Maybe two benches on each side of the fireplace. Storage/pull out drawers underneath?

Our new house needs a fireplace/ chimney makeover to be more in line with our style and preferred colors. We’re buying a lightish gray sectional and a camel colored accent chair. We’re putting down a neutral area rug with a floral pattern that picks up the gray and camel. We will not be replacing the tiles on the floor for some time. There is not a whole lot of natural light in the room, so I was thinking of painting the chimney and the walls a lighter shade than what they are now and painting the bricks white. Any thoughts? The tile will be replaced but with what color(s)? I’ll be using a bit of blue as an accent color in pillows, art, etc. I would like to stick with neutrals with the fireplace, but nothing too dark. (The elephants on the hearth are going to be moved).

Sometimes it is possible to make the fireplace appear more symmetrical as shown in the mockup below. We use a bifold fireplace door with black glass that you cannot see through when closed. The doors on the right would open to the fireplace and the ones on the left would have a black steel plate to cover the stone. Paint the inside of the fireplace black and it's not too bad when the doors are open, but you cannot tell the fireplace is off-center when closed. If you are intrigued by this concept, post these measurements and I'll do some calculations to see if it can work. Measure the width and height of the fireplace opening and then how much stone there is on the left and right sides of the opening. Don't measure the current door frame, but the actual fireplace opening itself.

IMO the TV is too high above the mantel . I agree the 2 boxes below the mantel make no sesnse since it appears this is a gas FP. IMO get a linear FP if that is the only place for the TV and then hang the TV at a much better viewing height That eliminatesthe 2 boxes and puts the TV in the right spot BTW the surround you show and the tile do not work together. It is also always good to see your style so post that in a comment here do not strat another post.

I like river rock. I'd consider removing the paint -- sandblasting? -- and replace that mantle with something more standard. It and the river rock aren't friends. Looks like a pile of marshmallows.

I vote for keeping the rock unpainted. Yes, remove the track lighting and fan. I think the fireplace will look better without the current red wall color.

Yes there is definitely way too much red going on but I will be painting as soon as I move in.

Oh, my , your fireplace looks so much better than that white one! I am sorry, but that is a perfect example of what NOT to do, A nice neutral wall paint and a rustic mantel is all that it needs.

Agree with others. Painting the walls white and removing the track lights will go s long way. I don’t mind painting the rocks white too but really dislike the mantle. Feels like it adds business.
