Fireplace makeover

Hi! We recently moved into a "new to us" home. I am slowly trying to renovate. My style preference is coastal, but I am having trouble deciding what to do with this 10 foot long fireplace. We are definitely planning on filling in the "hole" so we can place a TV above the fire place.

I did a mock up today, of what I am thinking of doing, but it just doesn't seem quite right. My colors are blue white and cream. I like how to wood gives warmth, but I am not sure if it is too many different materials. Thoughts?

@Amanda S I think the one opening was used for a TV but that would mean a person could only use one size TV and why would anyone want that anyway. 1990's homes were great. :-) I think you are on the wright track with your inspiration but I do not think the fireplace should be that wide.

Sorry, I do not think you should change the black to something light. I would drywall over the opening and paint the room. Together the fireplace and TV create a focal point in the room.

Your stones are nothing like the ones in the site you linked to; you cannot expect similar results. The stones on edge will disappear and the rounded ones will show too little surface. Further, that remuddled fireplace you linked to looks like garbage--like a bad stone job that used too few stones and waaaay too much mortar. That's the kind of thing that people post in here sobbing about how badly the fireplace (or backsplash or tub surround or...) turned out. Nobody--nobody--lays stone like that with that much mortar, except a DIY homeowner with no clue.

You really aren't far off. Lose the 'mantle'? shelf thing above the fireplace. No to a hearth the look is flat and sleek--as yours is. Paint over the gold tone louvers on the fireplace, or get a new door. Are those both doors that flank the fireplace? The missing trim on the bottom right makes it look like a door but I don't see a door knob.

Our new house needs a fireplace/ chimney makeover to be more in line with our style and preferred colors. We’re buying a lightish gray sectional and a camel colored accent chair. We’re putting down a neutral area rug with a floral pattern that picks up the gray and camel. We will not be replacing the tiles on the floor for some time. There is not a whole lot of natural light in the room, so I was thinking of painting the chimney and the walls a lighter shade than what they are now and painting the bricks white. Any thoughts? The tile will be replaced but with what color(s)? I’ll be using a bit of blue as an accent color in pillows, art, etc. I would like to stick with neutrals with the fireplace, but nothing too dark. (The elephants on the hearth are going to be moved).

Sometimes it is possible to make the fireplace appear more symmetrical as shown in the mockup below. We use a bifold fireplace door with black glass that you cannot see through when closed. The doors on the right would open to the fireplace and the ones on the left would have a black steel plate to cover the stone. Paint the inside of the fireplace black and it's not too bad when the doors are open, but you cannot tell the fireplace is off-center when closed. If you are intrigued by this concept, post these measurements and I'll do some calculations to see if it can work. Measure the width and height of the fireplace opening and then how much stone there is on the left and right sides of the opening. Don't measure the current door frame, but the actual fireplace opening itself.

I would just fill in the hole, leave the surround and mantle as is.

Paint out the crown moulding to match the ceiling color.

I would replace the carpet with a medium natural wood. while changing the flooring, I would remove the hearth and keep the FP flush.

Plantation shutters or bamboo shades on all the windows for the warmth.

I'd go with a cleaner wall color Behr Day Spa (a white with a hint of blue) it will show darker once you furnish the room and get all the window treatments in.

Not so literal with the coastal theme, just think fresher.

The two fire place openings looks ridiculous. It’s like something a 1990s new construction would have . Rip it out a put a single fireplace box in the center

@George I know, right! You got the nail on the head. The house was built in 1991 as part of a planned community. I hadn't thought about taking it out completely and replacing it with a fireplace box. Thanks for the idea.

I meant to show us the other walls so we understand the space. Where are the wooden shutters opening to on the left? Interior space?

Thank you for the ideas! The fireplace is currently black painted brick and the paint is chipping pretty badly. Everything else in the house is blues and creams so the fireplace sticks out as the really dark in comparison to the overall vibe of the house.

IMO the TV is too high above the mantel . I agree the 2 boxes below the mantel make no sesnse since it appears this is a gas FP. IMO get a linear FP if that is the only place for the TV and then hang the TV at a much better viewing height That eliminatesthe 2 boxes and puts the TV in the right spot BTW the surround you show and the tile do not work together. It is also always good to see your style so post that in a comment here do not strat another post.

@Paul F. Here are the other walls in the room. One wall has shutters that go into an office. The other picture has shutters that cover a window that faces the backyard, but I was getting too much flare for a picture with them open.

The obvious challenge is scale…this is way too much fireplace for such a small room…eliminating it completely and put the tv over a console table?..or the tv on the longer wall?…this is a dilemma that is addressed more accurately with a floor plan and pictures of all 4 walls..most importantly…the right size tv after deciding the right location…as great big tv will probably need seating at least 10’ away…🤷🏼‍♀️

Another consideration is are there any views?..or do you prefer there to always have a little privacy element in your window coverings?

The comment about shutters into an office is not clear…in a small space like this….opening up an office to expand the main room may be worth considering?
