Suggestion for Range Hood Insert (brand/model)

Hello! We are remodeling our kitchen and need to purchase a range hood insert (we are building an enclosure). We have been unhappy with the noise/performance of our past hoods, so want to splurge on this if it'll help us. Our requirements:

- Width: ~30"

- Depth: ~20"

- Duct size: 6" (actually we have 10x4 so slight more, but much less than 8")

- Powerful (~600cfm?) but also quiet! :)

Any help for a best-brand suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I read that article. Mostly quite interesting but I take some issue with the discussion about capture area. Of course this is a variable of how high above the cooktop the hood is. Therefore, if a deeper hood means putting it much higher (so that you can actually use the cooktop) then it's likely a poor compromise I would think...

When possible in situations like yours a ceiling exhaust fan.(if it can exhaust outdoors)...is a great option as it sucks out cooking odors as well as smoke...as for propane smoke there is a possibility that it can also coat ceiling with black soot...if not captured properly by fans or if you have low ceilings

At the moment, I would call them concerns pending further information. First, do you have any combustion appliances connected, air wise, to the kitchen? Combustion appliances include furnaces, hot water heaters, and dryers. If they all have their own make-up air sources, then they don't count. Fireplaces count unless roaring hot and quite large, in which case they need their own make-up air even without any kitchen ventilation effects. One of two windows cracked open a couple of inches will perhaps achieve adequate make-up air for a quite low CFM requirement in lieu of wall cracks and other dusty paths. Bathroom exhausts and dryer vents should have dampers that will not allow enough MUA for any purpose. Gas fireplaces are required to not have dampers, so only the doors limit back-drafting. That is also an undesirable path. 300 CFM, for example, is 5 cubit feet of air per second. This would require more than a couple of inches of window, even if unscreened, to avoid an undesirable pressure drop in the house when combustion appliances are present. It will certainly degrade the flow rates of the kitchen ventilation blowers, more so with VaH squirrel cage blowers used in Magic Lung systems. What are the claimed CFM of the VaH inserts you are using? (Zero static pressure values not Magic Lung claimed equivalent values) What is the area (or dimensions) of the air intake aperture at the bottom of the hood assembly containing the inserts? Is there some overhang of the overall hood relative to the entry apertures of the inserts?

I hate wood hoods they get greasy and discolor from both grease and steam so can't help.But I guees if you do not use the range it won't matter.As for the insert you need to now go to a place tha sells inserts with your meaurements of the hood you have already ordered which BTW should have been oredered after you got the hood insert.

Experience with range hood inserts for 15-inch deep IKEA cabinets

IKEA's wall cabinets are 15 inches deep. IKEA'sOMSINNAD https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/oemsinnad-under-cabinet-range-hood-stainless-steel-40462145/ insert about 14 inches deep, so it's right sized for the cabinet. I understand that IKEA released a new model of the range hood in last year or two. The new model is hidden inside the cabinet and has LED light strips. (The old model did peeked out under the cabinet and had halogen lights.) My questions are about the NEW model: 1. When installed, can you see the control knob below the cabinet doors? If yes, how big and what color is the knob? 2. Does this unit work well? Would you recommend it? (Reviews are not that great...but my options are few because I want a unit that's 14 or so inches deep) 3. Have you ever had to have it serviced? What went wrong? What company did you use to service it? I've heard it's made by Whirlpool. Will they come out to service it? Many thanks in advance for sharing! You will save me a one-hour trip each way to IKEA!

Capture area (hood intake aperture area) should overlap the expanding cooking plumes. Assume at least 10 degrees from vertical for all points across the top area of all likely pots and pans to be used on any or the hobs, and add some for burner flames if applicable. This implies that the capture area has to grow with height, and doesn't account for plume deviations due to cross drafts and human motion turbulence.

Capture areas smaller than this will likely miss capturing effluent and the effluent will spread into the house where it either condenses on walls and fabrics, or is eventually removed from air replacement.

Numerous threads here discuss sizing the hood, sizing the flow rate to assure that even if the plumes are captured they don't reflect out of the hood, sizing the duct for best balance between grease collection due to impingement and grease collection due to condensation, blower rated CFM to achieve desired CFM, and make-up air (MUA).

Quieting of the hood system can be achieved using a remote blower and intermediate silencer such as Fantech makes.

A 6-inch duct should be limited to 400 CFM, so a 600 CFM rated blower might be appropriate given typical pressure losses and blower fan curves. 10 x 4 duct, from a pressure loss point of view is equivalent to 5.7-inch round duct. (IRC Table M1506.2).

For a given blower restricted by duct size, it is probably better to use a larger hood and miss out on some extreme cooking capture due to insufficient CFM, then to miss out full plume capture on all cooking due to insufficient area to overlap the plumes.
