Can you name this plant

Can you help name the tall thin slender plants in this photo? Its height is about 4" -6" tall. It pops up in my lawn in the early spring each year. This weed is bothersome. What can I use to kill it?

Location: Memphs,TN. Growing Zone: 7

It's cardamine, probably C. hirsuta, aka hairy bittercress or shot weed. It is a cool season annual weed that is easily addressed by just about any lawn weed killer

Your picture shows the seed pods. Any minute now they will burst and shower further seeds into your lawn. Hence the common name Shot Weed.

i am surprised to see that they can be perennial [the old zone thing...] ... though short lived at best ..... brief search states some are to -15 .... i bet you can beat that low winter temp ... other resources suggest you can use some in the family as deer food ... i still wouldnt call it a shrub .... and of course ... you know i raised my little dirt devils out in the garden ... all dirty thumbs up for encouraging such ... but part of the lesson is things that need to be removed.. for various reasons .... its your choice on this one .... i dont have any personal hatred for this one ... ken

I hear more people cuss Cardamine hirsuta than any other weed. Probably because it starts germinating in January and they are not ready to be out there pulling weeds just yet. It was a nice surprise to see so much of it severely frozen after the recent polar incident.

I've seen people out mowing their lawns already. Craziness. Must be the Cardamine.
