I think the dining room rug is too small. You want the chairs ON the rug.When using area rugs, I would fill the space, leaving 4-6" of floor showing around the room. as for the entry, at least fill the space in front of the door. side to side, and deep enough to walk into the room on.

About entry rug - have you considered octagon shape or even an oval? An 8’ octagon might fit well in the approx 8.5” x 9” space. The ’looser’ shape of octagon seems more accommodating for your floor shape defined by stairs etc. & I think it’s a standard size so shouldn’t be too hard to find. I’d tape the space out on floor to check

Thanks for both of your replies! I never even thought of an octagon. I’ll tape out some standard options and see how they look.

I’m such a visual person - I cannot buy rugs or hang art without either taping out size or cutting a pattern to use for mock-up. Doing that has saved me much frustration of returning things & putting holes in my walls!

I like the octagan idea if you can find one you like. If not, then I 'd look for a standard sized 3x5 for the front entry.

Our Entry rug is 4 x 6 and the Foyer measures roughly 130 x 100.

So I got a couple of the octagon rug options. It seems like width is fine but its not long enough? I could move further from the door and center it more but then it defeats the purpose of people being able to step on it with their shoes.

@KW PNW Z8 8 foot octagon wouldnt work, its too wide for the space from wall to stairs. The other octagon I got is the same size, different pattern.

When in the Midwest I found my wool entry rug to soak moisture, and it didn't work for me. So I'd try a practical material, but doesn't look like an outdoor entry mat.

Your other challenge is working around the floor vent ;-) We live in an older home and have the same issue. Have you looked at a shallow half-circle the width of the entire door frame (sidelight to sidelight) with a cut-out for the floor vent? Another option could be rectangle (again with vent cut-out) to go from L sidelight outer frame to closet outer frame. Finally, can you get either of these in the carpet used for your stairs?

Are there any other vents in the entry space? By covering it you may find it impacts the temperature. It would be too costly to move it to be right in front of the L sidelight (why they designed them this way is anyone's guess LOL) so if you don't want to cut-out, try a half-moon starting at edge of door frame to the outer frame of other side light or, a rectangle starting again at door frame to outer closet frame. I'd pull the lighter colour from the stair runner (taupe?) - I think the dark would be too much of a contrast and your banister, treads and hall table (which is also a half-moon!) read almost black. You could also try a quite pattern with similar colours - solid with flecks.

Hmm…I see how you’re having trouble with this… Have you looked at carpet tiles from Flor. that would offer the kind of customization you need for an odd-sized space.

For the vent, place rug a few inches away from door.

ohhh it can be a surprise how cold and windy it can be. Oh, and snowy.

All the better that the rug blend some with the wood floor, so it's not as obvious.

One reason I posted a lamp - if its color connected with rug's color, it'd look 'together'.

Maybe in winter, you'd add a second rug, cause it will get mucky sometimes.. like from first runner in front of stairs to the room?
