I'd love to see a photo toward the front door taken showing the current rug and the entry door if you can.

Jan - I think that mirror may be attached to the pedestal under it.

Been there with scratching cat - lol sacrificing a chair.

I just don't know where door is... what's wrong with current rug? … move into center of hallway?

Here's another pic that shows the door. And, every guest ends up opening the closet door when it's time for them to leave . . . decoenthusiaste is correct that the mirror is attached to the pedestal under it. Theoretically the whole thing could be moved over to the other side, we're just not sure how to detach it from the wall. As far as the current rug -- I like it and have liked it for over 10+ years, but it's dirty now and the last professional cleaning we had (few months back) couldn't get it clean. We're replacing it and the runner for the stairs -- once we figure out what we want. The rug is generally more centered, but gets moved around when the floors are cleaned.

Thank you for posting some other photos. I can mock up some area rugs for you tomorrow in the space to try to better help u visualize them in your space. I’m East coast time or I would be happy to do it now. Yet, it’s late and takes a little time.

Porter, that's so kind of you! Thanks! pricklypearcactus, certainly open to something with red. I like the combo of blue, orangey-red and sand/beige, but it's not always easy to pull off. I've been going back and forth between a neutral rug so that I can put whatever art I want in the room and something more vibrant that includes a blue/red combo that goes with the platter. Always good to get thoughts of others!

Use the same size rug, but move it a bit closer to the stairs to center it.

I've tried some area rugs with red in them and it really isn't looking good. It would almost have to be a solid. I'm seeing a semi tribal mixed with mid century in the adjacent room as I can only see the couch. I keep on going back to something with black in it!

The rugs I've tried I'll place below...... although the angle of the photo makes the mock up a bit off kilter, but you can get an idea.

looking toward your dining room in your first photo it look very elegant. I really love the look of the silk spun and wool rug shown (in the wrong direction in the photo as it could fit it better to view) and it comes in different colors. It has a slight raised areas.

Porter - thanks for trying out the rugs. Red does seem to be overpowering. What do you think about the attached two?

I took a picture of the rug in the dining room (on the left) and the rug in the living room (on the right) and added in a couple of rugs to see which ones might work . . . Granted the DR rug and LR rug don't actually go together, so may not be worth trying to find something that makes all three rugs work together . . .

Porter, where is the "animal print" rug? I like that it's neutral and would be good to find out more about it.

I personally feel the two you posted with the reds and yellows become the focal point taking away from your decor as you have it... that's my opinion and we all have differing ones

The silk spun and wool? It's a bit thick so no door obstructions I take it. I feel the rug should be centered vs. over to one side as you have it.

The name of the first one that is more of an animal print is Jaipur Rugs and the name is Fables Roman... I have it in a file... it's fairly thick, but not as this as the silk spun and wool. If you google it you can see different people selling it and I'm sure different photos showing it more up close and with the edge folded so you can see the backing and corner to better get your thoughts on it. I think it's a very pretty look in the space.

Porter, thanks for posting those! I'm a little concerned about using a cool gray in the space given the yellow/gold of the mirror pedestal and the warmth I have in other rooms. Although the dining room chairs show up as a cool gray in the photos, in person, they're not quite that cool of a color. Dilemmas . . .

I understand... you must like it. I keep looking toward the dining space and it's polar opposite it appears from the space you are placing the rug. Some how I'd like to see the two rooms work together. I found a rug similar to the ones you posted that were very bright and we both felt they said, "look at me"! I found one some what similar, but again don't feel it works well in that style with the dining space which is right there.

Yes, the rug is too large... it comes in the proper size... works well with your decor there, looking in to your dining I feel?

Central Park Carrie also in a handful of colors including a red tone. It's wool and pretty. The problem as I mentioned is the dining room so I like this color
