Stone veneer overlay on concrete retaining wall cost? Same as wall?

So I live in a suburb of NYC and most of the costs posted here for most things are usually a fraction of our costs. So please bear that in mind. We have a rounded retaining wall which was newly built last year as part of a large renovation/addition and we are planning to finish the retaining wall around my driveway and garage area with stone veneer this spring. The cost for the wall was about 30k and apparently layering natural stone veneer on top of it, will cost a similar amount. Does this sound fair for stone veneer? Am I missing something?

Can't really answer that as we have no idea of the breakdown of the challenges and costs associated with the construction of the concrete wall or how big this wall is. But the application of stone veneer, especially with a curved or rounded surface, is very time consuming AND labor intensive and labor is the biggest factor in landscaping expense. The more labor hours involved, the higher the cost.

If you have concerns about the estimate you have been given, get a couple more from qualified masonry contractors or landscapers that do this routinely. Then pick the one that will provide the best work at the best price.

If your building a retaining wall over 1mtr high in brisbane , you will need an enginner to design it, he will take in consideration of the soil type for how deep to make the foundation, and also how much load is on the wall, if any load bearing surcharges are present like vehicles passing ect. Generally block walls will need a toe in the foundation that sticks out from the wall the higher the wall the larger the toe, the closer the steel risers are and thicker they get. The wall will need to be corefilled with cement usually 25mpa if its over 1mtr high, There will need to a sealant painted behind the wall and gravel backfill and a aggpipe drain, It is very important that the drain functions properly, meaning has fall and drains away to a suitable location or into the stormwater drain. macv - this is all kinda making my head spin. I don't want brick panel fiber cement or anything else very artificial looking for our retaining walls. But, the first builder to give us a bid wanted to use "cultured stone" @ $13.50/sq ft. His back off position was to just stucco the surface of the retaining walls. That wasn't the look I was going for, because I grew up with a summer home with a real field stone wall. At the time this picture was taken, the wall was at least 50 years old: We have 2 fully wooded acres and want to keep it as natural looking as possible. That same builder had an irrigation system ($3K) and landscaping allowance of $15K. We only want enough grass in a side yard so that our little dogs have a place to "go". We don't want a lawn or typical foundation plantings. We want it to look more like a cottage garden in the front and just trees and brush to nurture the wildlife in the back. The comment we got was that we didn't want to go much lower on landscaping for a house at this "level". Sorry for the semi-rant, but I was beginning to doubt myself and was looking for an alternative to plain stucco for the retaining walls that would have something like a stone look. Anyway, we just got another bid and much of the stonework is for Tennessee stone and looking at the fellow's work it is much closer to what we would like to see. We're also waiting for another bid where the builder is looking at real thin stone veneer rather than cultured stone. The only problem is that I'm worried that if we do real stone for the "faux" foundation that the Nichiha Sierra Premium Shakes will look to "fake", especially if we do a color that has a sheen. Sorry I was not very clear, I was just referring to the walls proper. You can run each wall conduit back to the house or from wall to wall then the house, depends on what is convenient. Just be sure to size the conduct properly (larger is ok) for the number of wires required. Your local building inspector can tell you what he will accept. Add one wire for the earth ground, it must be connected to your panel. I would suggest you get some landscape wire and run one to each wall, then you can connect speakers to it (the purest s will complain) but it works. 5 amp at 8 ohms will give you about 200 watts. Remember to check the voltage drop in the wire so you can size it properly.

Here are a few. Basically, we set the tire-bales in place first. The stone steps shown here, were originally just a dropoff from above. Flat stones were used to stack the front of each step, and we filled the gaps with construction debris - concrete chunks etc, and then put a layer of road base on top of each step. Very little concrete was used at this point. This photo is from above, right after the meandering sidewalk concrete was poured. It cuts through the concrete pad of the driveway, which is bordered for the pour to occur the following day. We had a wonderful concrete crew! This is the same area, prior to the concrete pour. The steps were in this "transition phase" through the winter. Nonetheless, they were functional. The driveway circles around all of this, and makes a straight entry into the garage. We did this for 3 reasons. First, a direct driveway would have been very steep. Second, even though we're on a cul-de-sac, we like the privacy of being down from the road and isolated. Third, the theory was that snow would blow off the driveway in this windy area. Sure enough, this works.

the rounded portion is on right and borders the curved walkway. the remainder is on left L in back left section of driveway. That part is 18" high but the part on right ranges from 3 to 5' high.

We have spent a lot with the same contractor on whole project so i trust him very much and the work quality is very high. this is why i chose him. he did give a cost for the veneer which seems to have been a miscalculation and it was off by 20k! This was last year, but as project overall was so expensive and I could wait till the spring since it would be at end of project, I decided to pull it out from budget. I wish now I accepted that bargain price. He must have done something wrong in calculating square footage.

There’s more than 30K of stone on that. You might have gotten a repeat project discount. That you should have jumped on when you got it.

well this new bid is about 32,500 - I just got that price on Friday so I will just check with others this week and it is still available but making sure. Thanks for your thoughts on this as I am not a regular on this topic.

So my GC confirmed that I need 490 square feet. What do you think of the quote in light of the square footage?

I am getting quotes using $65 per square foot to $76 per square foot for natural stone veneer installed. what were other people's experiences?
