Need some advice. Single or double bowl for kitchen sink?
Comments (40)Something seems to be missing in EVERY thread about Single vs. Double Bowl sinks. Large single sinks have the space for large items but lack the versatility of having two bowls. Double bowl sinks, regardless of the ratio of the bowls, just aren't big enough for a lot of items. But wait, you can have the best of both worlds IF you have a little space. When planning our kitchen remodel/expansion my wife and I got into the age old one bowl vs. two bowl argument. Our old kitchen had a Kohler Executive Chef double bowl sink. The larger bowl was not big enough for big stuff so I wanted a single bowl - she wanted a double bowl, so here is what I did. I had our KD order a 54" wide, quad door sink base (Medallion) and I put a Blanco Diamond Super Single Bowl (33" X 22") Silgranit Sink (440194) on the left and a Blanco Precis Medium Bowl (13" X 18") Silgranit Sink (440144) on the right. I separated the two sinks by 5" to allow sufficient strength for the granite "Bridge" between the two sinks. I also had 5 groves cut into the "Granite Bridges to allow water to flow between the sinks in the unlikely event someone left the water running in one of the sinks. While it does take some space and a little imagination to accommodate this arrangement I believe it is the best solution to the one vs. two bowl dilemma - we simply LOVE it. Just a comment about the Blanco Silgranit sinks - I cannot ever see us going back to a Stainless Steel or Cast Iron sink - Blanco Silgranit sinks are IMHO the beat sinks available today....See MoreSingle Bowl vs Low Divide Sink
Comments (18)I just went through this dilemma. I've had double sinks for years, not necessarily by choice. But I never felt they were so unlikeable to bother changing out just the sink. I'm in the midst of a major remodel of my conventional 1970's era 2 story colonial, that included taking down most of the walls and completely reconfiguring the first floor into open space. Thus I had the luxury (challenge/insanity/obsession/2nd full time job - unpaid) of creating the kitchen space from scratch. After many many visits to various Fergusons, big box stores, little box stores, I decided to go single bowl. But I'm going BIG - 36". I wanted a farm sink so ended up choosing the Kohler Whitehaven. I was intrigued by the low divide concept, but didn't go that route simply because I couldn't find one in the look and configuration I wanted. I spent a lot of time just thinking about how I cook and what my workflow is and will morph into, in the new space. I anticipate that there will be a period of adjustment in how I go about my cooking and sink routine. But I'm pretty excited about getting a 36" sink. And if all else fails, I can at least use it to bathe the Labrador retrievers. Or perhaps I could pour in soil, vermiculite and vegetable seeds and call it raised bed gardening? Comments (16)Boone- the 10 inch depth is just the sink, so adding the countertop in makes it about 11-1/4 inches to the bottom of the sink, So it is definitely a deep sink. To be honest, I didn't give the depth of the sink too much consideration during the planning process. I knew I did not want a stainless steel sink or a solid surface one like Corian or Swanstone, so that narrowed my options quite a bit. When I researchd Silgranit, I focused on the material and wanting double bowels. The sink is probably a bit to deep for my 5'5" and shrinking frame. Since my back hurts most everyday whether I am standing at the sink or working in the yard, I can't really judge the comfort of the sink but regardless, I love my sink. If you do go with a deep sink like this and are going to install a garbage disposal make sure your plumber realizes how low the garbage disposal will be and because the drain lines may need to be adjusted. It wasn't a problem for my plumber but there have been some posts on here from others with this sink that had to lower their drains after they found this out. I have attached one discussion below and there are some others on this forum too. Not sure if you need this picture but here is how my full size Insinkerator Evolution Pro looks under my deep sink. Comments (10)I am not against double bowl sinks, and understand why you like them. I am however against double-bowl sinks in a 30” size. This is not just my subjective view—let’s look at the math. The bigger bowl in the sink you linked has exterior measurements of 14x15. The interior space of that “bigger” side will be an inch or more smaller, so an interior of 13x14 or smaller. Now go look at your dinner plates, your favorite pan, and your favorite pot. Will you be able to wash them in a bowl that is 13x14 without banging into the divider and maneuvering them awkwardly? Forget soaking, I am talking about even trying to rinse them. The math is why you need either to get a single-bowl 30” sink, or change your kitchen design to fit a 36” double bowl sink....See MoreRachel
