I think you're going to deal with a lot of competition between them, and if you ever have to move one of them after their roots have mingled together you might lose your clem, as they don't like their roots messed about with too much. I guess if it's a small variety of rose and a small variety of clem, they could be okay. But, I've never planted the two in a pot together so I have no actual experience with doing it. Hope it works out for you!

Thank you for your post Mischievous Magpie. I am always into trying new things (probably why so many don't work out lol). The problem was the potted rose is sitting on a concrete patio so there is no space for anything in the ground and I couldn't resist. I actually have several very small clematises that could have definitely worked better since they wouldn't grow more than 3 feet or so but I didn't use them (probably another mistake). The roses are also not small roses so I am either going to have a spectacular display or a big mess.

What roses and clems did you choose? Hey, it will be an interesting experient either way, and there is always the potential to be pleasantly surprised! 🙃

I like to experiment as well, even if that means committing plants to live in conditions that aren’t ideal.

I am excited when an idea works out that wasnt expected to.

Maybe you can guide the clematis over the edge of the pots for the most part.

I actually did it with teasing georgia /Jackmanii Superba and Quick Silver/ Warsaw Nike (all monsters I know). I had these clems and roses just dying in 2 hours of sun so I had to try something or I was going to lose them anyway. They are right next to a metal railing that surrounds my patio/balcony so I am hopping they will go all over the railing. I also have Eustacya Vye and Silas Marner in 17 inch pots and may try them with Sapphire indigo which only grows like 3-4 feet tall to see what happens. I am planning on re potting them later to larger pots, but they weren't in my budget this weekend so I planted them on what I had at home.

I should mention I am soooooo excited for spring right now I will probably make all kinds of impulsive decisions that may or not work out lol. I am even planning on revamping some horrendous looking shed we have in our backyard and I have zero do it yourself skills.

I have two large pots that have sweet chariot rose with a dwarf purple clematis (cant remember what the name is- one of the evipo ones.) each winter i bury the pot most of the way in a raised bed. its been two years and both are happy. i figure it doesnt hurt to try. good luck!

I planted Warsaw Nike in a huge pot with an established James Galway last spring and so far they are both fine. Planted Rhapsody with Winchester Cathedral in a pot ...they're ok too. Will just have to wait and see . I planted another Rhapsody in a pot with dianthus and I see the Rhapsody plant is sprouting up very well so I don't think the dianthus hurt it. I thinned out the dianthus a bit.

Hi dianela !! i plopped a rigucci clematis in this pot last year when i didnt know where to put it . i honestly forgot about it till a few days ago ! it seems happy for now with my piroette rose . ill send you a pic when it blooms !

Thank you Sam. It seems you made a good decision by selecting a smaller rose and clematis combo. I would love to see your pot in full bloom sometime if you would be ok with sharing, I bet it looks spectacular.

Erasmus =) thank you for sharing your experience so far. I am in love with Warsaw Nike, I also have one planted with a climbing iceberg and just enjoy her dark coloring so much. She is one of my few clems that performs with only 3 hours of sun. I bet she will look amazing with James Galway. I would love to see your combos when they bloom this year.

Lilyfinch =) I am soooo glad to see I am not the only who has tried this lol. It definitely may not work long term, but hopefully for a few years. I bet your combo will be spectacular and can't wait to see it. Rogucci is one of the most enchanting clems out there. I have recently started adding Princess Kate, Diana and I think Duchess of Albany to my collection and really want Rogucci.

Dianela, I figure it might not work for long too, but that's ok. Rooguchi is a vigorous one, and I hear Duchess of Albany is too. Of the Texensis ones I planted Princess Diana first and found it tough and vigorous...I think that type can take dry conditions better than some others. I planted Duchess of Albany in a dry spot and watered it some during our 6 mo dry spell last year. I thought it might be toast but I see now it has several new sprouts coming up so I'm happy. I put it near a big Marie Pavie. These clems are very exciting.

I love the looks of Princess Kate. Bought it a couple of years ago but it turned out to be Sweet Autumn Clematis.

Absolutely lovely erasmus! I really love the how romantic and delicate the Texensis bunch looks. In the future I would love to expend my collection. Sweet Autumn is beautiful also. Where do you normally purchase your Clematis? I have had great luck by purchasing from Brushwood Nursery, donahue's and Hummingbird farm. The Brushwood plants are the largest I have ever purchased and if in the budget they are totally worth the extra money. The Donahue's are much more affordable and even tho they are very small, are very healthy and do great.
