I hate all of God's little creatures.
Comments (54)Interesting title but I am definitely an animal lover though I am not too keen about encountering a bear or cougar in my yard!! But rats! Years ago I had several nice paphs and one day I discovered most of them had been eaten down to the roots!! It turned out a neighbor's boy had dumped his rats into my yard and they found their way into my greenhouse and had something to eat!! I used traps. But over the course of the years I learned that the best rat catcher was not a cat but a possum, who also eats slugs. I also have leanred about using nonlethal tactics to protect your plants. That is just leave food in an area regularly that is away from the plants. However with the arrival of raccoons forget all the above!! Not only do they make a mess of things but much of the time it is done in sheer play, even carrying off my doormat and tossing it around!! So I just let it go. Plants are nice but I am adverse to killing animals who are hungry and dealing with situations that have been and are being created by the ineptitude of man....See MoreAll of a sudden I feel like a bad mom!!!
Comments (38)I think you're doing pretty good if you're just now starting to feel like a bad mom, Britta! I've had a great case of mommy-guilt (97% self-inflicted, of course) since I went back to work after kid #1 eight years ago! Can't tell you how many times I went to grocery store at 10:30 pm the night before to pick up cupcakes from the bakery (you know, the WAAAAAAY over done kind with 2 inches of fluff frosting that's been "frosting spray-painted" and then dusted with those sugar sprinkle-things? - no way anyone's even going to think I MADE those things!!!). Of course, I do try to home-bake the necessary stuff as much as I can, but sometimes daughter doesn't give much warning that she needs a snack/whatever to take to school: Apparently teacher appreciation is going on this week at her school. There's a "theme" for each day. "Goodies" was yesterday, all I had to send was stale vanilla wafers! Needless to say, she went sans cookies - I rationalized this by saying that the teachers didn't need a horde of "goodies" anymore than I did! However, today they were supposed to take a "sweet smelling" gift (this crazy present-fest goes on for a WHOLE WEEK!!! Imagine!) and so I made good by getting a nice basket from Bath & Body.... Oh, I could go on, but hey - I'm mostly just happy that everyone is wearing (semi) clean clothes, has brushed hair/teeth, and clean faces/hands. If we can do that everyday, it's been a success! Try to laugh at myself often. (Remember, I'm just double-wide trailer trash, after all!)...See MoreAre you getting all new furniture?
Comments (35)Our current house is almost 100 years old, and our new house is somewhat contemporary, at least on the interior. A few things that will work in the new house are going, but not a lot. The spaces are just too different (floor plan as well as style) plus we will have a lot of built-ins (downsizing). So the A/V stuff and one area rug is going, plus a barrister's book case from Grandma, a table my dad made, a couple of lamps... right now we are not living there except on weekends, so we have a hand me down sofa, a folding table, cheap patio chairs and camping furniture! (On the plus side, we are getting really familiar with the actual space and not just the plan version.)...See MoreNeed so much help with a new pond....I really hate it!
Comments (26)I felt you probably paid around $12,000 to $14,000. Don't tear it out : ) "we are adding a Roman paver patio abutting the pond... so if I add a large garden bed beside the patio on the large rock side, will it look okay sloped in to the patio? " I think that'd be lovely (see pic below as to why I would think so, lol). Yes, and do make sure the slope is away from the pond, going downhill to avoid drain-off into your pond - and I know you're thinking 'but those rocks are so tall...' it's not the rocks, and there's always the possibility of flooding, which we experienced this winter, and thankfully our pond was higher than it was meant to be, although with the slope of the dirt we added, you cannot tell. I'd add stepping stones leading to the rocks, and steps up to them if needed. Make it into your own sanctuary. Our pond was to be smaller than it came out (currently it's 9 ft Wide x 7 ft Wide water edge to water edge, the rocks around the pond make it around 12 x 8+). Though small, it suits our smaller back yard well. The paver patio curves, and the pond is a nice fit, but again, you can't see the fish from the patio... we have no larger rocks like you, but I spend more time on the seating wall watching the fish/pond, than I do on the lounge chairs. See all that bare ground? Every baby plant was started by seed this winter/spring. In the years to come, it will change, fill out, and be the garden pond I wanted... just different. But better I think. Don't give up. Your pond has tons of potential! By the way, do leave un-planted areas to walk around in your garden so your family and visitors can view from various angles. ETA: our back yard was a barren wasteland 11 months ago. You have time. It'll get there. And if you hire a landscaper, again... google pond photos, save them to show the landscaper the feeling you want....See Morevinmarks
