Wood is obviously classic and elegant. Stone is durable and could also look good depending of course on the stone.

Desks were NEVER intended to be used without some kind of surface between the desk and the paper. Pre-computer, desk pads were used on every desk and office desks would often have matching "desk sets" - they were so ubiquitous that the classic 1957 romcom staring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy was called Desk Set 😂

I had a built in wall unit installed when I remodeled and it has a wood "top". The section where I keep my feet (e.g. the technical desk area) is occupied mostly with my 27" Apple computer because at this point I use paper and pen so infrequently that I can literally go for weeks without using a pen. When I do need it I just put something to pad it so that I can write - sometimes I will literally pull out a pad or just use a catalog I haven't tossed yet for padding.

It is actually fairly difficult to write on a hard surface so you need something softer underneath anyway because the pen doesn't work that well with one sheet of paper on a hard surface - and pressure on one sheet of paper will definitely injure wood. As I posted, that is why people with wood desks all had desk pads and those with less expensive metal desks (non-executives) also had desk pads because writing on a metal desk surface was very difficult.

If you actually plan to write frequently on the hard surface, get a dedicated office desk pad. If you are like most people and write infrequently just use something laying around.
