Blooming today in the greenhouse

Another daylily bloomed in the greenhouse today. This is Ultimate Design. We haven't tried this in the ground. Often, Maryott daylilies don't thrive here and we wanted this one to breed with. We put our Cherry Pie a la Mode on it. We are hoping for whiter petal color and thick red edge.

I think eveyone sees color a little different. Look at Amazon Butterfly and see what you think. If you every want a soft pale pink, consider Constitution. That is one of my favorites. I know Crimson Beauty is considered red, but in my garden it looks more like a dark bright pink.

Rodrigo, My plant is quite small. The p-bulb with two buds is only about 8" tall. This is quite small for a catt species. Seems easy to grow to me. Intermediate/Warm temps and bright light got mine to make a sheath in August and the buds started coming up in October. They'll open any day now *CROSSES FINGERS*

Maryott has the shape I love down pat. I tried two of his but one got rust so bad during my one year problem with it that I had to pitch it. The other wasn't a color I cared for so I passed it on. Yours is a nice Nan with a lovely round form and ruffles. I hope it makes it for you..............Maryl

I'm surprised Ultimate Design doesn't have whiter petals. Maryott's photo sure makes them look a lot whiter. I think it will be a good one to cross with Cherry Pie. I've only had three Maryott daylilies truly thrive in my climate.

I've heard many people in different locations say that Maryott daylilies don't do well for them. I've always wondered what they meant. Bill grew in the rarified atmosphere of California in a greenhouse for the most part from what I understand, so are his plants finicky about climate? Too hot, too cold? Wonder what it is because if pictures meant anything, his daylilies would be in everyone's garden you'd think..........Maryl

His daylilies tend to be tender for us. We haven't grown very many, but we have lost a couple of the ones we tried. Anything grown in California's climate is always suspect for us.

Most that died for me were evergreens. I have lots of evergreens that do fine, but not Maryotts. Many Spacecoast daylilies I have tried did similar, but stayed around a little longer. They often did not die right away, lingering a few years. Never adding fans. When they finally died, they emerged in the spring, but would sometimes die in a late spring freeze. More often they would bloom then die, I always thought that odd.

The three Maryotts that have done really well for me are evergreen Billy the Kid, and sev's Born in California and Mexican Magic. Euphoric, an evergreen, probably would have done better if not repeatedly attacked by grubs.
