It appears high priced to me. Why plexiglass instead of real glass? What is the top of the vanity made of? I hope you have soft closed drawers for that price.

I don't know that glass would run you that price, and yes plexiglass is just plastic after all. Custom is always more. I too would expect them to be inset in a channel at that price point. DH made our bedroom furniture. I wanted a tri fold mirror for my dresser. The price of the mirror kept it on the 'to be done' list. I tripped upon a scratch and dent section of a furniture store where the exact mirror I wanted was less than $100--perfect condition. The previous shopper didn't want that part of the dresser evidently.

What was the difference in price if you had used patterned glass instead?

We asked for frosted glass to begin with, and they kind of snuck in the plexiglass into the final design and I didn't catch it. The vanity top will be quartz.

In todays age, Plexiglass if you can get it is a hell of a lot more expensive than glass. And honestly it is a terrible choice for that application.

Plexiglass is an odd choice but maybe there was a reason. All glass is held in with clips on cabinet doors so that sounds normal (no photo…). Overall price for a custom vanity, install, and quartz top seems fair, don’t obsess over one line item.

What was the reason for the plexi ? IMO a poor choice for any cabinet door plexi scratches always looks cheap in place of glass BTW that was rip off since small pieces of frosted glass are cheap and I must say the style is not what I would want for bathroom storage I do not love getting on my hands and knees to access stuff in a cupboard .

I must live a different world IMO a better choice would have been 2 Godmorgons from ikea with a custom counter and not plastic door fronts

The total price of the vanity seems reasonable to me. I had custom cabinets done for kitchen and bathroom and spent at least that on the vanity - and that didn't include the counter :-).

Plexiglass is actually more expensive than glass. I have a custom plexiglass treatment for the upper cabinets in my office/den area which is a combination of opaque plexiglass (not frosted) and a teal plex in an Art Deco-ish design.

I understand why you have those as a design choice as it "lightens" up the look of the room more than a solid wood would have. You wouldn't have clear glass in a bathroom vanity since you don't generally have display items the way people do when they opt for clear glass in a kitchen upper cabinet.

My bathroom cabinets actually have an antique mirror element to lighten the visual feel of the bathrooms and my interior doors have a lamina center with wood decorative stiles and frame in order to create more of a sense of lightness in my interior spaces. Lamina is completely opaque - not even a shadow when the interior of a bathroom is lit and is also very soundproof.

I don't often agree with @Patricia Colwell Consulting but i had the same reaction re: the godmorgons (or even get a custom cabinet designed like the Godmorgon and made out of fancier materials.) Once i installed a Godmorgon with 4 deep and wide drawers there is absolutely no looking back. cannot imagine having anything else.

Are the sinks going to go over the door section? if so - that space isn't all that useable to being with, right? with the p-trap, supplies and shut-offs?

And the bottom drawer configuration seems odd to me, visually - but that's a design choice.

Maybe plexi is the right choice - but if it were going to be +$800 vs a solid door, the decision would surely be made for me. Did you not have a detailed quote?

I don't think you overpaid and as attractive as IKEA might be to some people it was never going to be an option for me. With custom I was paying not only for the superficial elements like the door style but also full customization of the interior including how "high" every drawer would be.

OP what is the point of second guessing your choices? Your price for the vanity presumably included the expertise of your GC in terms of his supervising and determining that it was constructed properly and installed correctly.

Presumably you got the "bid" for the vanity which included the total price. Most of the time my custom items didn't include specific prices broken out unless they were an additional design element after installation such as mmychanging the design on the upper cabinet plexiglass feature in my den/office. So that was equivalent to a change order when you do get pricing for the specific changes.

When I was configuring the interior of my kitchen and bath cabinets I didn't get an individual breakdown for any of the options I added like rollouts or a drawer with a built in custom knife rack. When I decided to add some additional modifications to the interior I got a breakdown of that since that made sense - e.g. the rollout would cost $x per roll out.

But typically the bids would not break down what I was getting in terms of cost of specific elements. If I received a bid and I thought it was not affordable to me I would have asked what the cost would be with solid doors - for example.

Typically the upcharge for glass includes painting the interior of the cabinet with the (plexi)glass front, whereas solid wood doors typically have unfinished interiors. If that cabinet has a finished interior then the amount seems completely reasonable, however, if the interior is unfinished then it seems needlessly expensive.

U.S. plastics are mostly from natural gas and not crude oil. Plastic feedstocks, from both natural gas and crude oil, are by-products and so are only loosely associated with the price of oil and/or natural gas.

Even today, a half sheet of high quality polycarbonate is still going to be under $100 and the OP needs less than a quarter sheet. I suspect this premium has little to do with the cost of materials and more to do with painting the interior.

Your cabinetmaker is just as shocked at the price as you are, believe me. I've been shocked at the prices in some of my proposals and shocked again when they were accepted. I'm running a business, not a charity. The numbers are what they are and there are damn few custom cabinetmakers living in mansions.

Frankly $5200 for the cabinet, installation and the top is very inexpensive. Where I am , the top alone would be about $1400 - $1500 for a remnant piece . Adding glass/or Plexi to a cabinet involves finishing the interior to match and routing out the doors for the glass to be inserted. That price seems completely inline.

While this might seem a fair point, it is also a point of failure. Having a customer inquiring about being scammed on the internet is a business failure.

I suspect that the upcharge is for painting the cabinets, but it is the cabinetmaker's job to get the customer to understand that. Actual value is much less important than perceived value and if you can't make the customer see the value in your charge then regardless of how reasonable it is, it is a failure. While @pkp asked about it here, how many other customers would just be annoyed at the upcharge and believe that they were taken advantage of? How many referrals will be lost because of that?

Plexiglass and Lexan are different. Lexan is better and more expensive. Find out which one they used.
