Two related Qs: Info you give out & earring hole re-piercing

Info you give out to vendors and Q about ear lobe piercing re-do. Long.

Do any of you just blithely hand over personal information to vendors? Name, DOB, Address, (mother’s maiden name? SS#, Bank, DNA?).

A few weeks ago I was at a shopping center where there was an ear piercing establishment that looked cluey and clean. I was about to shell out a lot of good money for a piercing and a pair of 14 karat gold plated small earrings(I’m sensitive to some metals). I only needed one ear pierced, but their pricing includes an earring and a piercing or two earrings and one piercing.

I was getting ready to pay when the clerk – stabber piercer asked me for my date of birth. They wanted a copy of my drivers license or passport or some such document to be sure that I was definitely over the age of 18. I’m about 100 times over the age of 18 and that is very apparent. But the establishment is owned by a large corporation with outlets all over the place and they probably have one rule fits everybody and they want to be legally safe that a person is of age if they go to stab their ear.

I offered to let her have access to other government issued documents that have my name but do not include my date of birth. They really don’t need to know my date of birth, they just want to be sure somebody is over the age of consent. I was reluctant to hand over my name date of birth and address as well as a copy of my drivers license or passport. Maybe that’s a good enough thing because the cost was over $100 and I thought, well, maybe I would just go back home, screw up my courage and use a chicken stuffing closure pin. That ought to be large enough. But would I be able to then get the wire through a bleeding ear, little skinny as it is.

Now, if anyone wants to read further and comment on my need for re-piercing…:

I actually have a new sterilized medical needle, but I think its a small gauge.

It appears that the pierced hole in one of my earlobes has partially closed and I cannot successfully get a wire or a post through it. I think the last time I had a wire through that ear was perhaps November 2021. I remember because I lost a nice earring due to wearing a Covid mask. (Got home and it was missing.) I suspect a few of us have lost earrings due to mask wearing.

It was never a polite earlobe piercing — my roommate might have used only a 21 gauge needle.

As for piercing, They sell devices online but the earring stud that goes with it is usually made out of surgical stainless steel that has nickel. I suspect that might be one of the metals that I am sensitive to. But maybe I can buy one of these kits and try to work in a quality gold stud/post. I don’t know how my roommate did it when years ago she pierced my ears with a small gauge needle.
